AlleyCat's 67 F100 build * update 8 - 3 - 08 *
Hi all. I've had a couple threads on this truck and decided to combine them here. A couple weeks ago I ran an opinion poll on what to do with this truck. Insanity prevailed and I decided to do a budget build rather than part it out Here's what's been done up until last week.
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=25953
After it sat tarped thru the winter and spring the first item on the to do list was to reseal the drip edge with sealer made for this purpose.Silicone caulk doesn't do a good job at all.
The camper shell is providing parts storage. The next thing I did was to spend a couple hours under it with a pressure washer.
While the 352 runs it has virtually no oil pressure once it warms up.It also has a stuck lifter and both carb and distributor need rebuilt.
I was going to go over it and run it awhile but then the old Ford better idea light bulb came on. The solution for a tired 352 is a tire smoldering 390 4V I pulled out of a 76 F250 CS I scrapped last spring. Verified 68k miles, 40 psi oil pressure at hot idle and no strange noises.
It does of course have the standard FE exhaust leaks. Last night I got the manifolds off. Whoever did them last time didn't believe in anti sieze compound. I broke 5 and I've done many exhaust studs. Got the broken bolts drilled out and tonight I tapped them back to size. It's gonna get new freeze plugs, new valve cover gaskets, pressure washed and painted before it goes in.
More to come.

The stuff I used comes in a caulking gun cartridge. I used about 2/3 of a cartridge. It's called Fusor 800EZ made by Lord Corpoation in Cary, NC.frankc67 wrote:kool beans another bump saved , quick question how much sem sealer did it take you to do the drip edge ? I fixing to tackle my drip edge.

I couldn't find seam sealer at the local parts stores so I stopped at an auto body supply place. Stuff is pretty easy to work with. Don't remember the exact cost but I got change back from a 10 spot.

re: AlleyCat's 67 F100 build
A little update. Since I'm lifting 2 FE engines with a trip pod I decided to pull the front sheet metal back off.
I worked until almost dark. All that's left holding it down are 2 bellhousing bolts. I'm gonna pickup the pressure washer on the way home from work. After that I'll lift it out. Frame and firewall are gonna get painted before the 390 gets set in.

I wish I had a nice 390 sitting around. Glad you decided to keep it in one piece. I guess the new job is working out for you.

Here's another update. The 352 is out. It's tarped until the swap is done. I only had a few hours today but I got a lot done. Pressure washed the firewall and front of the frame. After that I wrestled the 390 out of the shed, stripped some small stuff off of it, knocked out the freeze plugs, sealed the carb and exhaust then pressure washed it. I also used a garden hose and flushed out the water jackets. It's been my experience that FE engines hold a lot of crud in the lower water jackets. This one was no exception.
If the weather holds I'm planning to finish cleaning the firewall with a cup brush and get it in primer tomorrow.

Another update. Firewall got cleaned up, primered and painted with spray in bed liner. It holds up better than paint and will help quiet the cab a bit. The 390 got new freeze plugs, painted and set in the frame. I'm now in process of cleaning and painting the small stuff. I'm hustling on this one because in a couple weeks it's gonna get put on hold again. Got 3 scrap trucks and a bunch of firewood to cut up before fall.

re: AlleyCat's 67 F100 build * update 7 - 27 - 08 *
Slowly but surely I'm moving forward. 390 is all bolted up to the trans, exhaust, mounts, starter, throttle, cab grounds, heater hoses and p/s brackets are all finished. The dampner is rust pitted to the point the timing marks are illegible so I grabbed one from the 360 in my parts truck.
Next up is to get a hood over it but first it needed inners and a rad support. The rad support that was in it is earmarked for my 72. The one I used came from a 6 cyl dent that used the narrow rad. The V8 mounting holes are there but the opening is too small.
A slicer blade on a grinder solved that problem pretty quick.
Rad support got a coat of black and the inners got Ford gray left over from my DD. I'm tweaking the dent hood hinges so they work better.
I'm working to get the hood on it then I'll finish up the wiring and other stuff. The lack of a garage can be a royal PITA.
More to come.

Thanks for the comments.
Last night was spent getting the hood on and aligned. The dent inners and hinges work okay but if I get the chance to do it right I'll put a set of bump inners back in.
Also got the dampner and pulleys cleaned up and painted. I did a right royal screw up and now have a scar to prove it. I had the dampner in a vise to clean it up using a cup brush on a 4 1/2" angle grinder. The brush caught the vise and threw the grinder into my belly. The brush grabbed my t-shirt and balled it up tight enough to stall the grinder. I now have the eqivalent of road rash on my belly.
Now I'm on to more fun. One of the areas our trucks really benefit from upgrades is wiring. The systems weren't great to start with and 40 years of butchery doesn't help. I'm working out the engine systems now. The lights and other stuff will come later. Although this truck had a ground strap from the engine to the cab I decided to add a couple extra ground wires. All the connecters are crimped, soldered and sealed with heat shrink tubing.
I spent some time tonight trying to sort out the alternator wiring. The original alternator harness is so trashed I'm reworking the harness from the 390.
Stay tuned.
