Does the T18-1E have an input shaft seal?

Post by robroy »

Good evening,

I heard from Hugh (my father) that some old cars didn't have seals in their transmission input shafts, and that originally, only 4x4's had seals there. The thinking was that the only time a leak would happen would be if the vehicle were spending lots of time on an extreme grade, and originally folks figured only 4x4's would do that.

Is this true?

Also, does the T18-1E have an input shaft seal? If yes, how difficult is it to replace this? I have it all out in the open already (engine removed).

Thanks very much!

here are a few pages I found full of info. Yes it has a imput seal, but I have not replaced one, so I don't know how hard it is. Can't be to bad.

Good morning Jason, thanks very much for the links. The offroaders.com link clearly shows the seal! It doesn't look at hard to replace (but looks can be deceiving).

Does anybody care to comment on the difficulty of replacing the seal?

Thanks again Jason,

Easy as pie to replace.

Did it on mine.

Popped the front cover off, popped out the seal with a hammer and a screwdriver, and popped the new one back in.

bout as easy to do as the wheel seals.

Transmissions that lacked input seals had spiral grooves cut into the input shaft to keep the oil from running out with the engine running.

Of coarse, this did no good if you parked on a down grade and shut the engine off.

'Evening Dustin! Very interesting--thanks for the information.

Is it true that this is an antique build style and that all cars have seals there now?

As far as I know it is. The newest thing I've seen that lacks an input seal is an NP540, a medium duty truck tranny used through the late 70's.
