OT, but truck related
When I was changing the oil in my 2002 Ranger, I noticed the transmission is leaking. I had the transmission redone about a year ago. It seems to be leaking where the transmission and t-case bolt together. Seems the rebuilder sealed it with just plain ol silicone. Suggestions on how to fix this?

The 1 year warranty is out, I also can not afford to be without my truck. I have no other way to get to class.mljjones67 wrote:Take it back and have them do it right!
I thought about taking it back to the lil ol po dunk shop I had taken it to. Then recently my buddy took his Ranger there, and he told me he had to take it back and have the transmission adjusted after they rebuilt it. So the competence of the place is in question now.
EDIT
Also at times when driving, usually in between up shifts..the transmission acts like it just feels like it "lets loose" and then catches again. Like if it was a manual, that I had stepped on the clutch and then let go.

Better check the fluid level. If it feels like it is slipping the fluid is probably low. Eventually it will fry if the fluid is not kept full.
As far as the leak goes. Pull the T-case, clean the surfaces, check for bolts and threads for wear, clean the surfaces good, put new sealler on it (Permatex Form-A-Gasket), bolt it up and torque it down. Alot of the tranny to t-case applications didn't use pre-made gaskets.

Ford seals the transmission output shaft and the t-case input. There's no need for a gasket between the two and you should not use silicone unless you plan to go through deep water. There's a tattle tell weep hole cast in to the transmission flange that's supposed to drip if you have a leaky seal.
You need to replace the tranny output seal or t-case input seal, not seal between the t-case and tranny. Sealing between the two with silicone just makes a mess and makes it so you can't tell if you have a leak. The space between the tranny and t-case will fill with fluid, the tranny or t-case will be low and you won't know it until it's too late.
GM and some dodges don't use transmission output seals in their 4x4's. Modern Fords do.

Re: OT, but truck related
How hard is it to replace the transmission output seal, or t-case input seal?

So where is the output seal?

Wow, I'll just put my foot in my mouth then! I've worked on the stickshift rangers through 2005 or so and they all have output seals, guess I was wrong on the autos. Apparently they got rid of a seal.

No problem man, you would think there would be some sort of seal.
