bellhousing/starter matchup question

Post by blacktruck »

Another questiom from the FNG.
The bellhousing that came with the truck(D7BP 7976 AA)doesn't quite fit a starter sold for your run of the mill 302.
Came with a "custom"horseshoe shaped plate that fits over the cutout mounting ears, makes putting the starter
in a real hassle.
157 teeth on the flexplate,C4 behind a 302,I've checked so the 77bronco starter is the same # as the one thats in there....
what do I need to get?

here I go again answering my own Qs
found this link on fordmuscle http://mmerlinn.com/catalog/miss_yoodil ... tm#default
tons of casting numbers in that site
discovered the bellhousing that I've got is designed for a 164 tooth flexplate
makes me wonder if they didn't build the whole truck at a pick and pull
