auto trans cooling ???
what's up with the crazy cooling set up for the tranny on my 67? a hard line comes out of the lower hose and routes around into and out of the trans or block. too greasy to really tell. i need to look at it again. is this how they were all done?

Re: auto trans cooling ???
on a 67 COM tranny .... yea. a splitter comes out of the bottem hose with a metal fitting a ruber hose goes from there to a metal hard line that goes around the engine and to the tranny then out through the cooler then from there to the engine. or something very similar to that. that is one screw ball transmission
My 67 is the same way... but not for long

Re: auto trans cooling ???
so coolant dripping from the pipes is probably not good huh?
it does make for a good resting place for the starter when you get that last bolt out.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
probally not good could be a simple fix but were your parting it not probally needed to work on it... one reason i want to change to a manual tranny besides that they are more fun for me to drive is that i can see going through some rougher terrian and i rip that cooler line or cooler off then im in trouble.. or that something inside the tranny goes wrong and the slush box becomes a SLUSH box.
ill have to remember the starter trick

Hey, if you can get that thing power-washed before you start pulling things apart, I'd really like to get some good hi-res pics of that setup for the site.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
Lower radiator hose.

Routes past oil pan on drivers side. Looks to be held there by the oil pan bolts.

Goes under the bell housing and comes out on passenger side here.

Trans mounted cooler.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
ir must go from the cooler back into the block. that's the best i can tell. i'll get some pics after i get the body off the truck. that should give me some room to take pics. mike's look pretty good though. i wonder how rare (or not) those coolers and piping are. i've never seen one before.

The picture that has the starter in it on the right side you can see where the hose goes into the block.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
Thanks for those pics Mike!
Good job!
I find it odd that this setup is barely even mentioned in the Factory Service Manuals. In the section describing how to remove the transmission, it merely says to remove the lines from the external cooler (a.k.a the heat exchanger). And the valve body schematic does show the two in/out fluid lines for the cooler. But that's all I could find.

No problem Keith. I have taken the exhaust pipes off so I can get a couple better picture for ya. I plan on pressure washing it too for better pics.
It is a funky setup.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
here are the pics i could get. mikes are probably better. they are in sequence from the drivers side lower radiatior hose aorund the back of the engine to the passenger side of the tranny:

this upper line goes into the block on both sides and uses a "t" on the passenger side rear:

this is on the passenger side. you can see the line that comes across with the "T" and where it goes into the block on the pass. side:

the top line i'm assuming is the supply line since it comes from the lower radiator hose and the bottom line is the one with the "t" and goes back into the block on both sides:

here is the cooler. it is a harrison unit:

this is from the top. you can see the lines going into the trans.:

i'm not very good at explaining things, but i hope this helps some.

Re: auto trans cooling ???
My 66 Camper Special Had the same cooler set up on it. I just took it off and put an aftermarket cooler on it.
If you buy a bottom radiator hose for a standard trans it will fit perfectly from radiator to water pump. That allows you to do away with the split hose. Plug the water outlet in the block and then just run two new lines fom the outlets on the trans to your new cooler.
