Strange Transmission Whine (With Video)

Post by FordTruck »

My tranny has been having this weird whine it starts at about 1,000-1,500 RMP. It sounds like it's not in park or something. I don't have a drive shaft in it right now and I installed a B&M shifter and it says its in park so I don't know if there's someting worng inside or is this normal when there's no drive shaft installed. I guess I should also say its a 302 with I believe a C6 (or at least that's what B&M kit it took to install the shifter) If it would help I can take a vid of the noise.

Put the drive shaft in and see if the noise goes away. It might be that the insides are moving just from fluid flow. Just a guess.

A buddy had a J10 4X4 that was missing the front driveline. It would not move unless it was in there. I forget the name of the T-case but it had a open differential inside of it that had to be held still to engage. Just one of those weird things or ideas that people have. :o

Jake there wasn't really any celebration I just drove it around the block a few times and now I can't stop even though I don't have any lights or a legal plate

Anyways it still has that whine while I'm sitting in park and first start it and rev it a few times to keep it running.

It's probably the converter. Could be the pump.

Well I've had the drive shaft in it for awhile now and at idle in park if you rev it it'll still whine. I've driven the truck a lillte bit and the tranny seems to be shifting fine except when it's cold it takes a little tap of the gas to get it in reverse but other wise it dosen't seem to slip. So any ideas on what could be wrong. I guess I should also mention it dosen't have a kick down on it at the moment. And ideas :?

Does it make that noise while it is in gear or just park and neutral? My '68 whines sometimes but never while in gear. I thinks it's the modulator because if I put it in gear, the noise will stop. :2cents:

Fluid level :? Also what about the kickdown linkage. I am under the impression that if it has linkage it must be hooked up in order for the trans to work properly. Don't know why, I just think iI read it somewhere :?. Maybe you could check a manual on that.

Hope things work out.

the kickdown linkage is just for passing someone on the hihgway. it kicks in when the carb levers trip it. and that is usually when you have your foot to the floor in a stopping action. or to pass another car.
