Oil capacity 9" differential?

Post by LeoZelig »

Guys, I need to change the oil in my differential, and I need to know how much oil to buy.

I've searched the forums, but can't seem to find this info... which is surprising - I can't be the first with this question. If I'm missing the answer, my apologies for asking it again.

Anyway, I hate to get into a job and not have enough, and I also hate buying way too much.

Does anyone have an idea of the capacity of the 9" differential on a 69 F100?

Thanks in advance!

Ahhh, so a Ford 3300 IS a 9"... I see.

Well, that clears that up.

Hey, thanks Fordman for the quick answer. 8)

I picked up some Lucas synthetic on the way home and I'm going to use my office's vacuum sucker oil change thingy tomorrow during lunch.

Have a good one.

Ford 9 inch rear end takes 3.25 quarts of 90 w according to the manual. 80-90w works just fine.

don't you just fill it up until it overflows out of the little filler whole?

Ya, but it's always nice to know what to expect so you know when it's getting full.

Exactly!

We used this suction tank thing that our mechanics at work have to remove the old oil. I didn't want to take the cover off or loose and deal with the whole gasket issue.

We sucked it dry, but it only took a couple of quarts of new... so I'm guessing we didn't get all the old oil out. I thought about trying again, but at that point I wouldn't have had enough left if we sucked out the new oil/old oil mix and wanted to fill it back up. So I'll go with it as-is for now. A mix with new and old is better than all old, I figure.

At some point in the not too distant future I'll have to fix the seeping pinion seal, and at that point I'll change it all out.

Thanks for y'all's help.
