spool vs mini spool
i am sure that this has been talked about several times, but what is the difference between the two? is the mini spools purpose to lock the axles together all the time and a spool more less like limited slip.... is this right, did i answer my own question????? thanks guys....

Re: spool vs mini spool
A spool is a spool. They both lock up the rear. The mini spool is smaller and fit OEM Open type (non limited-slip) differentials. Hope this helps!?

Re: spool vs mini spool
I should + that the Spool takes the place of the Original Differential Case.

Re: spool vs mini spool
so either way it is put, they are mainly for racing or off road use, being that they lock the axles together.... and on turns there will be wheel hop or chirp?

Re: spool vs mini spool
YES. That is true. Look into the Lockers, True Track or the limited Slips. I'm not one for welding gears, because I don't like to be stranded out in the middle of no mans land! The choice is yours and good luck to ya!!!!68swb wrote:so either way it is put, they are mainly for racing or off road use, being that they lock the axles together.... and on turns there will be wheel hop or chirp?

i dont want to weld my rearend up, i was just using it as a comparision for me to get a full understanding about the differnece, thanks guys for the info. i am going to look for a cheep limited slip carrier or something like it, if not i will just keep what i have, i dont plan on doing anything carzy with it. at the moment.

Re: spool vs mini spool
I've seen several brand new powrlok carriers improperly machined with far too much runout in a recent years. Welding the spiders to the carrier does not weaken anything when done correctly. It's definitely irreversible once you do it, but for most common axles a complete replacement open carrier is not an expensive thing if you ever wanted to go back. Welding the spiders together is essentially a home made mini-spool. You're forcing the crosspin(s) to take the entire brunt of turning the axleshafts. Makes your diffy only as strong as the crosspin.
