trans install

Post by kyle ray »

Hey fellas, I am installing my manual trans back into my 360 I did not pull the bell housing when i pulled it out. I am having difficulty in installing it back. first which way does the bearing face - the one on the fork. I assume the clips face the transmission and the ring side faces the clutch? Should i pull the bellhousing assemble it with the trans, then install. any tips you guys can give is appreciated. this is my first trans removal and install. :?

what trans do you have? the splines are probably not going into the clutch just right. i think the flat face does go against the clutch side.

I dont know what model it is. it came out of a 72 302/3 on the tree. i know it is light duty. I pulled my T-85 out and thought i was just gonna slip this in place. When i pulled mine out i just took it out of the bell housing. Well now i am trying to get the new one in and the release lever and bearing are causing me grief. So after i got frustrated I got out the chiltens manual and it said to remove trans with bellhousing. This is where i am now I have all bolts out of bellhousing and starter off of bellhousing and it will not pull loose. not even budge. I was gonna put the bellhousing on the trans get the lever and bearing on then slide the whole thing into clutch and bolt it back together. i just cant get the bhousing off! Am i missing something :? it is a 360 . By the way i have the 1972 truck so i have the drive shaft. :help: :fr:

if alll of the bolts are out. then it could be stuck by grease suction and on the line up pins on each side. you will just have to keep trying to get the bellhousing off of the line up pins. they are located on each side of the bellhousing i think they are at the bottom bolt holes.

Double and TRIPLE check that you've removed all the bolts. Sometimes one will get hidden under some grease and get overlooked. If you've got the bolts out, the bellhousing should pop right off. There are a couple locating pins in the back of the block that fit into holes in the bellhousing flange...it might make the bellhousing fit tightly. Just gently tap a flat-bladed screwdriver into the crack between the block and bellhousing on one side just a tad, and then do the same to the other side. Then just tap each screwdriver a little bit into the crack on each side evenly as it starts to separate. The key here is getting it to come straight back...don't let it start to get cocked to one side.

the only other bolts i could think of would be the ones that hold the inspection plate on. other than the ones around the bellhousing.
