I'm new to the site but its really cool!
I have a 1969 with a 240 straight 6 but would like to see about changing to a automatic overdrive. I know the bell housing is the same as a 300 or a small block V-8. I'm not sure about the flex plate. Has anyone ever put an AOD on a 240?? Any help is appreciated!

I'm sure you could mate an AOD right up with the right flexplate.

Flex plate is easy, same as C4. The trickier part about an AOD is make DAMN sure that the kickdown is properly adjusted.
If its not adjusted correctly, the tranny is toast in a matter of a few miles.
If you have all the original linkage, you can adjust pretty easy. But if you currently have a manual tranny and you are recreating the linkage, it will be more of a challenge.
I looked for quite a while for the correct linkage for a 240 to automatic tranny and failed to find oringal parts. I ended up using Lokar stuff with some mods and I got a C4 working behind my 240.
I wanted an AOD as well, but after a lot of reading, I chickened out, for fear of burning it out due to inability to get the kickdown set correctly.
Finally, the 240 is a pretty anemic engine. Its not a lot of fun to drive behind an automatic tranny. My experience is with a C4 and 3.00 rear end ratio, with 7.00x15 tires.
I am scheming to move to a t-5 manual tranny someday or maybe a M5OD Mazda. In any case, I think the 240 just has too little power to waste on a slush box tranny. Caveat Emptor.......

65 f-100 SWB, 240 I6, T-18, now swapped to C4 with difficulty. Yeah, I know. Its a 67-72 site. But my frame and entire drive train are just like yours!!!!

I had a 240 with a C4 and it had plenty of power. It was sold to me as a 300 and I didn't realize it wasn't until I dug into it and found the engine tag.
Of course mine had a 4.10 rear end too.
I think a 3.00 is too tall for that engine unless you are running shorter tires.

I've never had a 240 that wasn't beat hard into the ground, but it always seamed the 240's had a powerband that was atleast 500 RPM higher than the 300.

My 4.10 geared one would cruise effortlessly at 70, even pull the 16ft trailer ok at that speed. At 75 it was starting to complain a bit. Mileage sucked at any speed, never could get more than 12.
