AOD TRANNY PROBLEMS SHIFTING to OVERDRIVE

Post by airbusflyboy »

I have a 1969 FORD F100, engine swap to a 302 V8 using two barrel carburetor and installed the AOD tranny out of a 1987 Ford Mustang ................. Cannot get this thing to shift up to the overdrive ! Have had it back to the Tranny shop a couple of times, last time they installed some kind of valve that tells the tranny when to shift up from the lower gears ..................... My understanding is that the OVERDRIVE depends on the position of the throttle cable position (?) I have had a Ford Van with EFI setup and AOD, and I remember that it would shift up to OVERDRIVE at about 45 mph ....................... Any ideas on what I should do to make this work ? I don't want to invest in another tranny but if I have to put a C6 in this to make it work, so be it ....................... All advice welcome, you can call me if you have time ! Thanks, Mark in El Paso,Texas :?

Does your shifter linkage go into all 7 positions? P R N D 3 2 1? I'm assuming the AOD is like that. Maybe it's not engaging correctly into drive. :2cents:

My friend had a Volvo with a 350 Chevy and an overdrive tranny but the Volvo only has 6 positions so to get overdrive he'd have to get an "in between" spot.
Side oiler FE, see if you can catch me!!!

I had a 68 w/ an 302 AOD that came out of a 84 LTD. I put a holley on it and had the same problem because of the kick down linkage. A Ford tech said that yo had to have special tools to adjust it or the trany would fail. What I did was bent the kick down rod so that a WOT the lever arm on trany was all the way down. Then I kept fine tune bending it until the shift points were right. I put another 40k on it w/ no problems. That is a nice setup its been a while but I think I could run 70 mph under 2k w/ 3.25's and got 17+ gas milage.

The way to adjust that is to hook up a trans pressure gauge to the TV port and adjust the rod by TV pressure. I cannot remember what the pressure is though... :hmm:
