price on gear change
im rebuilding my 9" and i called a shop to ask how much it would be to install new seals that i have on my axles and to replace the pinion seal and gear set that i also have and i would bring the axles and chunk to them and they told me 225$. now that seems a bit much to me i mean its only about a hour job for them and they dont have to buy anything so why so much? i didnt want to do it because i have never set up gears before and i dont know how to get the axle seals off so waht do yall think.

Axle seals are just pounded in.. nothing special there, just a little care.

yep, just make sure the seal isn't cocked in the bore before driving it in. Apply some gear lube to the seal (rubber) surface, avoids a dry start.71PA_Highboy wrote:Axle seals are just pounded in.. nothing special there, just a little care.

Re: price on gear change
That's a reasonable price. A good gear guy can set up a 9 inch with OE gears in 10 minutes. Someone without the necessary skills can spend hours setting it up only to destroy their gears in a few miles.

pulling your own axle seals, they make a little tool you can buy in most car part stores or Harbor Freight called a "seal puller" and you hook one edge under the seal and pull a tad and switch to other side, etc, keep it coming out straight don't get it cocked or it will snag. Putting back in, use some real thin lube, get a "seal driver" set from Harbor Freight (about $10) for plastic round peices and you figure which one fits and use that to tap them in flat. Or you could find something laying around that is same size as your seal and drive in, same deal if it tries to get cocked at all, stop and fix immediately, the seal will neither drive in or pull out if it gets cocked.
The chunk I believe you could undo your driveshaft and undo the nuts holding the chunk on and lift it out if the axles were pulled and take the chunk somewhere and get the new gear installed. Would be good time to wipe out whole pumpkin with lacquer thinner on rags or something to clean out old nasty rear lube and get good and clean and when the chunk goes back in, most folks I've talked to you some sealer like silicone rather than a gasket, put a bead unbroken all the way around and let skin up and then set the chunk in once nice and flat and you migth need some help. You don't want to get to wiggling and break your silicone bead you had going all the way around the pumpkin.
