PM's question?

My simple question is this: How do I know when I have a PM and how do I access it?

PS Now I have a second question: How come when I click on a smiley I don't get a smiley, all I see is punctuation marks. For instance the smiley known as "confused" shows up on my screen as What's up with that? Help me please.

Excuse my ignorance. Apparently when you type in the comment box smileys appear as symbols but when they post the appear as smiley's. Is that how it always works?
