Post by hotrod ford »

i'm going to replace the right fender and rock deflector. both had serious damage to them when i bought the truck. i have the parts already to do that though.

Hey that's a nice looking '67 you got there! It looks sort of familiar. Congratulations on starting the project. Best of luck with her!

BTW: I think you might need a right inner fender or at least a new battery tray. :P

Did you make any more progress on the truck? I'm curious to see what you find.

I also want to know what was going on in that engine once you get into it.

took the manifold and head off today. pushrods looked good and there hasn't been any seized hardware yet. did find two rust head bolt though. leading me to think leaky head gasket.

you had enough chain on that motor didnt you? usually i put one bolt in the rear and one bolt in the frotn and a chain between the two bolts. that gets the engine right out without havign to use alot of chain that might move the motor around much.

more pics of the eng as it comes apart. head cylinder walls and rotating assy.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x115 ... 1248041699

there are only two spots like this mounting hole on the block. i think this is where it was leaking antifreeze into head. the cylinder wall look really clean and when i rotate the crack everything operates very nicely

i dp have to say that the inside of this engine looks really good. there were no signs of rust or antifreeze all ove the place. when i drained the oil there was no water in it either. so i really think the smoke the p/o talked about was a blown head gasket.

it dont see any evidence of a bad head gasket letting water into a cylinder. there shoul dbe some sort of discoloration between a water jacket and a cylinder. it could be else where like inside fo the cylinder wall. or maybe it didnt run long enough to stain anything.

the only piston that has anything different is the last one with a build up of extra carbon, thats it. it looks like this engine has had a rebuild already. i did notice that the paint on the pan did not match that on the block. i really don't see why there would have been white smoke coming from it by what i have seen so far. :hmm: i am going to at least have the top of the black machined to smoth it out on those rusted areas.

I wonder if it is an automatic and the engine wasn['t the source of the smoke. I have heard of the Vac mod on the trans leaking tranny fluid into the vaccuum system and then into the intake some how.

I used to drive the truck about 50 miles out hwy 181 to my place in the country about twice a month. Otherwise I didn't drive it a whole lot or get on the highway very much. The last couple of trips out of town was when I started noticing the smoke. It was coming in the cab through the hole in the floor. I guess the plate was not bolted down of I was missing the shift boot(4 speed on the floor). It was a little smoke at first but then on the last trip it was kind of a smoke screen especially going over55 or accellerating or going up a hill. Finally I left the truck out in the country one day after having a hard time starting it and eventually killing the battery. The battery may have been week to begin with. I believe I had been fighting with rust in the fuel tank and went through some fuel filters as well. Be careful with that fuel tank. Maybe clean it out or replace it.

I don't know if this story helps.

i don't know then. it had plenty of oil, antifreeze. anyway it's tore down now and hope to have the head and top of the block machined. i'm going to keep the cam and lifters but replace the bearings. will take pics of the cylinder walls once i get the camera back from my wife. maybe the smoke was from somthing else. any ideas?
