Rustoleum paint job

I am interested to see how this turns out as I myself am going to have to do mine on a budget also. From what I have heard, it should work fine. I think when I do mine, I will put an extra couple coats on for color sanding and buffing. Good luck and keep us posted.

pulling your vent windows only takes about 15 minutes from where you have it. id pull them real quick. iIm also interested to see the final product

Well, it has been raining for the last two days so I haven't gotten much done. I did pull the vent windows, finished sanding the PS and fiberglassed up the "vent" above the windshield and below the drip rail. Since I'm putting in AC, I want it to be sealed up tight.

Now to finish up sanding the drivers side, some body work and, then it is time for primer. I'm hoping to prime tomorrow or the next day.

I'm going with white and there is no clear coat you can put on top of rustoleum.

Austin, Yeah bring on the piccs, I am also interested in the process. "DO and don't", "hints & tricks", How to mix, mix with what?, etc, etc..

Not much of an update. I think I'm finished sanding. I'm only doing the cab, doors and bed right now. I will do the fenders, hood and other bits next. I'm just out of room and all the other parts are out in the rain right now.

If it dries up enough I will do some body work tonight. If not then body work will be tomorrow. Here is a shot of what got done.



So, the next steps are:
body work
final sand
prime

If I get it in primer this weekend, I will be happy. I'm hoping to be finished and have it back on the road by the end of next weekend.

Quick update cause I'm about to go to dinner.

Finished sanding in 150.
Did body work. First batch to bondo hardened in 3 minutes. Too much activator. Made a new batch and finished body work. Could have used some finishing putty but I don't really care. This is a daily driver rough and ready truck.
Put on the first coat of primer. Cut the rustoleum primer with 25% thinner. It was too wet and I got some runs. I turned down my fluid control and kept going. It went on great. It a whole quart of primer to do one coat on the outside of the bed, inside and outside cab, and inside/outside of doors. I sanded out the runs after about four hours. It looks great and I can't wait to put on another coat tomorrow.







Tomorrow I will lightly sand with some 320, tack rag it and put on another coat. Then I might do one more after that.

Then after final primer, I will lightly sand with some 400 and put on the top coats.

Well I sanded out the runs and decided it didn't need another coat of primer and I went with the paint. It looks pretty good but you can really tell that I didn't take the truck down to metal. Oh well. So, it is pretty glossy and looks good. I will put on at least one more coat tomorrow. If all is well, then I will wait a couple of days and buff it out. Oh yeah, at 15% mineral spirits, it flows out well and I only got one run. Not bad if you ask me.

Thanks. I do want to be clear that it took way more time than I thought. If it would have been the original paint I was painting over or even just 2 coats of paint it wouldn't have taken too long, but with trying to get through all the damaged paint with the DA sander, you can really tell where I had to dig in to get all the damage out. Taking the truck apart only took about 8 hours total. Sanding it took at least 20-25. It would have taken another 20 to get the body right and then I would have needed some primer/surfacer too. Spraying that would have taken a couple of days. With those things it would have turned out perfect (near to it).

I will be driving this truck every day so we will see how well it holds up.

I'm going to be sanding out one run and putting on another coat today.

Your getting there... I might try rustoleum, just depends how good or straight I can get the body, I want mine black. You've chosen the right color, imperfections are easier to see with darker colors.
