Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
I have only had the truck for a few weeks and don't have any major plans for her yet. She runs pretty good most of the time but I am learning more about her each time I take her for a drive. She definitely has a few bugs to work out. I didn't care that much for the rear bumper anyway but it had to come off yesterday because when I tried to install a trailer hitch there was some interference. I thought I was gonna need to haul a large trailer so I took my old trailer hitch with me to "Cielo trailer rentals". Mine didn't line up with the frame so he agreed to trade my hitch for one of his used ones. We had a little trouble lining up the holes with one of their used ones so they installed this one for $110.00 with trade of my old hitch. This apparently is a new hitch but didn't drop as much as the other used one so we went ahead and removed the bumper. Anyway they decided not to rent me a trailer because it wasn't built to haul a 7000 pound forklift. Yeah, I bought two 24 volt forklifts from the surplus auction. I intend to use the electric motors and other parts for my Electric Chevette project. I found a guy today who will pick up and store the forklifts for me until I remove all the electronics and motors and give him the leftover parts for scrap metal. It could be about 10,000 pounds of scrap for him to sell. I believe they are getting 5 bucks for every 100 pounds right now!

Anyway I didn't want them welding anything to the frame but they torched or ground down the rivets under the crossmember a bit so the hitch would mount flatter. The holes behind the crossmember were already in the frame but he drilled out holes towards the front. I'd like to know if this looks like a solid installation. I was thinking the hitch doesn't extend far enough back toward the rear of the truck. Well, I guess I will have to see how my new bumper fits when I get one. I want the flat c shaped iron bumper I think they used to install at the dealerships back in the day. It's just a simple flat steel bumper.

Re: Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
Here's another angle of the trailer hitch with no bumper:
Everytime I drive the truck the brakes eventually lock up. When this happens the pedal gets harder and harder to press down untill it is stuck all the way up. I have a hard time picking my foot up that high anyway but then the pedal simply won't move at all. The brakes only release after I let the truck sit about 45 minutes or more.
Also, now the truck has started to idle rough after driving for a while unless I keep my foot depressed on the accelerator. It seems to be flooding or running rich to me. I looked at the distributor and rotor and they appear brand new. The vacuum advance hose had fell off the nipple on the carb. This is the hose that goes to the distributor. It runs smooth cruising on the highway. It has an edlebrock carb.
The engine seems mounted at a strange angle instead of level like the engine I saw in a '72 mustang. My engine is higher in the front. I wonder if the motor mounts are too high or something. The truck seems to slip when turning corners. The transmission sometimes seems to slip. The fluid level seemed ok. I will double check it. Sometimes after slowing down and turning a corner the truck revs as if it was in neutral before shifting. I was told this is a C6 and a 400 CID engine similar to the 351M.

Re: Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
I couldn't give a flip about the truck! We need to know about the forklifts!
#1. Always tell the rental place you are hauling a truck cab that weighs 500lbs. I once told them I was picking up a miata and they told me my truck wasn't rated for it. GRRRRR!
#2. Tell me more about the forklifts. How much did you pay for 2 of them? How big of a controller are you going to use? How far do you want to go? How fast? Are you going to use a transmission too or just direct drive? Sealed lead acid or ???. I really want to go pick up a $500 dent side and build an electric truck. I only drive about four miles to work so it would be perfect! Also, I learned the other day that the prius has an electric AC compressor! How cool would that be in your electric truck? AC on electric! NICE! Are you posting somewhere else about your electric car project? I will just read there so you won't have to write everything twice. It kills me that I only live four miles from work, but since I drive home for lunch, I burn at least two gallons of gas every day. When gas goes back up that will be $10 a day!
I'm going to be building an electric bicycle first to get more familiar with the technology and then move on to something bigger.

That is basicly how mine is mounted. Where your 4 bolts go in the bottom of the frame I have the bolts going into the side. I also have a piece going to a croosmember above the spare tire which I think you do too if I'm looking right.

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

Re: Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
I managed to get the "golf cart" I originally had my eye on so I may not even need these forklifts. The forklifts are only 24V but my "golf cart" is a 36 volt truck. It's a Taylor Dunn industrial truck. I don't know whether the motor and controller are good but as soon as I connect 36 volts of batteries to it I'll find out. This thing originally was only designed to go 15 mph but also can carry quite a lot of weight. It appears to have a gear or chain drive mounted directly to the axle.dablack00 wrote:I couldn't give a flip about the truck! We need to know about the forklifts!

There is another industrial type truck, actually this one goes 55mph and can be registered for on the road use, just down the road from me. It runs on 72 volts and comes with a rebuilt controller. The owner is asking $900.00 but it doesn't come with batteries. You could even convert your '67-'72 F100 with this truck. It has a direct drive system. The electric motor is mounted directly to the differential without any gearbox/transmission. Here are some photos of that truck: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dolinick/tags/021109/show/
T-105 golf cart batteries cost about $100 bucks a piece and weigh about 60 pounds. I would need six of them for my 36 volt EV conversion. So $600 dollars and 360 pounds of batteries would be the minimum to get my electric vehicle going with limited acceleration and probably not fast enough to get on the highway. With 3 car batteries or marine deep cycle batteries I can run the car but it would have a severly limited range and running the batteries very low could damage and/or shorten their lifespan.
I have a long way to go but at least I am getting some of the parts together to make my EV conversion really happen.

Well perhaps I still can rent a trailer and haul those forklifts myself. I paid $312.00 for the pair. I have heard of alternative air conditioning systems and or compressors. I won't be installing the AC in the Chevette or at least not bothering with it until I get the car functional. A 4 mile commute you might also consider an electric motorcycle or moped. I live near major bus routes so I would try to take the bus and or my bicycle if I had a 4 mile commute. I mean besides my electric car. .

The only thing holding the hitch on are those 4 bolts. It seems pretty solid.towtruckerfour wrote:That is basicly how mine is mounted. Is that a 9" rear or a Chrysler 8 3/4' ??
It would look nasty in a drag car with HUGE meats in the rear...

Re: Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
Yeah, I don't know. I just noticed it looked just as beefy as the rear end on my pick up truck. The electric motor connected to the differential is a 14:1 ratio and I believe at 3000 rpms the truck was designed to go a top speed of 12 mph. Needless to say it has lots of torque. The thing is rated to tow about 12,000 pounds as well. I am wondering if I can change the gear on the differential and get a ratio more like 4:1 and get that car cruising about 40 mph more or less. Otherwise I will probably use the stock rearend and transmission of the Chevette to get her going.papabug71 wrote:Is that a 9" rear or a Chrysler 8 3/4' ??

man that rear if changed to a 4.0 or 4.11 would allow ya to make a funny truck. see narrow down a bump and make it a funny car dragster.

Re: Cindy Lou's Truck ('67 stepside)
um, i think i got rearend gears confused with the gear reduction on the electric motor but anyways. I am curious about changing out the itty bitty disk brakes. These things are so small probably only good for the low 12 mph speed the truck was originally intended but man i'm getting way off topic now.rjewkes wrote:man that rear if changed to a 4.0 or 4.11 would allow ya to make a funny truck. see narrow down a bump and make it a funny car dragster.
Actually with a high voltage motor like 96 volts or even 72 you can run a bump with this rear end. You just have to shell out big bucks for the controller or build your own contactor or salt water controller and also shell out big bucks for the battteries if you want any range. For drag races i guess you only need a short burst though. Hmmm. An electric funny car may be nice.
