I decided to start painting my truck. I was looking into compressors and HVLP guns etc. Then decided to just do the roll it method.
I took the ash tray in (which was pretty much original color, it might have faded slightly in the 40 years it's been sitting inside) to color match.
I'm still in the first stages of it:
Original condition
1st coat on hood
Here's the hood with the second coat after sanding.
I decided to go ahead and do the sides of the bed
before
After 1st coat
Here's a shot of the passenger side.
So I've still got more coats to go and more sanding etc. but this is where it's at right now.

I wet sanded with 220 then painted then 220 and painted again so far. Next I'll go up to 500 grit.
I'm using a 4" ultra dense roller and follow up behind that with a foam brush.
I'm using 4oz of paint and 4oz of penetrol stirred together at a time.
So far I've used 12 oz of paint.

there's no reason the final finish shouldn't last for a long time if waxed regularly

Yeah, the data sheet for the paint says it's applications are tanks and bridges. I figure it it lasts for a while on a bridge it should last pretty long on a truck.

Your truck is going to have a factory shine when your finished,BTW great job on taping off your trim i know that takes longer than to paint it,you going to paint inside the jams and under hood?

Re: Decided to paint my '70
Actually those shots were how I painted it. I didn't tape anything off but was just very careful.
However I got tired of being careful and just decided to take all of the trim off.
Half way into taking the trim off I thought "It's a lot easier to just be careful".
I'm not sure what tool they used to get to some of the sections of the molding but whatever it was I didn't have it and had to use a 3/8" open end wrench.
I took off the front bumper and took out two of the bolts holding the rear bumper so it would pivot down.
My door jambs are pretty good.
I'm somewhere around coat number 3 or 4 depending on which panel we're talking about.
