Re: Machine shop anwsers
Practicalmachinst.com is a good resource for machine shop issues, but home shop/hobby stuff is looked down upon. I'm just a wrench bender with a mill, a few lathes and every welding machine you can run on a 200 amp service.
I learned a bit about large rotary phase converters, industrial air compressors, building concrete forms and 3 phase elctrical code to make my 40X45 shop a reality without spending a fortune or pissing off the power company.
Some of my stuff-
oxy/acetylene
Miller 180SD TIG W/Bernard cooler
Miller 300 TIG W/homebrew cooler
Lincoln 255 MIG
Airco 100 MIG
Miller spectrum 701 50AMP plasma
Thermal Dynamics 25 120V Plasma
ACCU 9X49 BP clone 3HP head, power X, ballscrews, Fagor DRO
1980 Mazak M-4 22X60 CNC Lathe with Fanuc 5T and RS232
South Bend 10K bench lathe
35 ton mechanical H frame press
3X60 belt sander
Milwaukee mag drill
Landa Spinjet 150 gallon aqueous washer
Crest ultrasonic parts cleaner
ICM glass bead cabinet
Quincy 325 LVD 5HP 3 phase primary compressor (20 CFM)
Quincy 390 LVD 15HP backup compressor (70CFM)
fully automatic self starting and loading 30HP (100 amp) rotary phase converter

Re: Machine shop anwsers
i have seen woo dlathes. you put the wood inbeteewn the two end spindles and turn the motor on and the wood spins. . so i have always been curious on how they could put a crankshaft in a machine liek that and turn it down. the crank jornals for the rods would move back and forth away from the tool. or do they have some sort of follower that woudl follow the movement of the journals?
also what is the angle on the dangle?

Re: Machine shop anwsers
A crank grinder offsets and indexes the ends of the crank appropriately for each rod journal (and main). Crankshafts are never turned, they are ground.
The process overall is simple, the complex part of crank grinding has got to be knowing what wheel to use with what job and knowing all makes of crankshafts better than anyone else. The engine machine shop I use has an ancient 1920's grinder that takes a lot of labor and skill to get a journal with zero taper. The big crank grinder downtown has several large hydraulic grinders and more crank cores than you'd ever see anywhere else.
