Enlarged Oil Filter
I started up the F250 a couple of days ago ('68 - 360 cid),& heard a "gurgling" noise.
I shut it off,& noticed that the filter was loose (& oil everywhere),& the filter had expanded.
What would cause this?

Re: Enlarged Oil Filter
Is this a fram filter? I've been reading quite a few instances of Fram filters doing this recently. I know of two people personally that have had this happen to them. When it does, the filter is a real mother to get off.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a Fram. They are total crap.

Re: Enlarged Oil Filter
May have been that the relief valve stuck. To be on the safe side, I think I would plumb in at least temporarily a gauge before I fired it again. I don't know how much pressure these engines will go to, but I do know that a Cummins with a stuck relief valve will do close to 300 PSI.

Stuck relief valve. Filter brand not an issue. 200psi will swell up the best of them.
Went through this on the C600 - oil gage pegged, then dropped to zero. Fortunately not out on the road somewhere.
still made a mess.

Re: Enlarged Oil Filter
I had this exact problem this time last year, except the filter on my 390 actually ruptured at the seam. It only did it when the oil was cold and thick. I blew up Frams, Motorcrafts and STP filters. My oil pressure guage, which goes up to 100psi, would peg instantly so, it was going well above that.
Turned out to be the oil pump bypass, which was clooged with lifter grindings from a wiped cam. Hopefully your's is just clogged up with oil pan scrunge.
I had a 50 chevy that had no oil filter and the manual recomended flushing the engine with kerosene every few thousand miles. Drain the oil, pour in a few quarts of kerosene, let it sit a while then crank it with the coil disconnected. I don't know if this would work here but, it might. beats dropping the pan in 20 degree weather!

Re: Enlarged Oil Filter
It was a Napa Gold filter.I had a couple of spares,so I put
one on....... same thing.Probably the oil pump bypass, like you said.
Also, I was having problems with the truck dieing every few miles,
got it home & will only (barely) run when I put gas in the carb.I
thought it was the fuel pump.I bought a new one - still won't start.
I might have really damaged the engine.I'm thinking about a 390
swap now.

could be a pin hole in the fuel line someplace. my 68 has one right where the line come down out of the cab and it bends to go to the rubber hose.

I've used Gunk brand motor flush for over 20 years. I swear that's all it is!recomended flushing the engine with kerosene every few thousand miles.
Sure smells and looks like kerosine.

Re: Enlarged Oil Filter
The highest I have ever seen in an FE is 160 psi. The 427 sideoiler pump does not have a pressure relief in it so in a non sideoiler there is not a block relief and that pump will do 160 in a non sideolier FE.
