#3500 dana44 discbrake conversion

Post by eggman918 »

This winters shop project is to have effective front brakes on the beast.I hope to use ford parts where possible. The initial plan F250 350 twin piston calipers with a fabricated mount from spindle bolt circle to calipers, this way I will account for disc offset and diameter.Only two parts to make that way.I think that there are many different rotors to choose from,so I will take measuring tools to boneyard and see if I can find one that will give enough clearance.I know some of you are thinking why all the trouble on an obsolete front end?IMHO they are extremely tough and with my 390 44 ring/pinion/axle shafts will handle the HP.
axle tubes are 2.75"od X i.375"id
steering knuckle hemispheres are .687" wall thickness
Tapered roller bearings instead of ball joints
But they LEAK and do require much more maintenance, however I accept that for peace of mind when in the boondocks
Hear are pics of axle just out of storeroom
I have just started and will keep updating if anyone is interested
any and all input is desired it will only improve the end product :fr:

If this is the rear axle then make sure to do the front for some good stopping power.

*EDIT* Stupid me I wasn't even paying attention, of course it is a front axle.

I like it Egg! I know there are some variance in 44 tube diameter over the years, but I think most 2.75" tube OD 44's used .500" wall mandrel drawn tubing.

Definitely update this thread, and also, if you need any dimensions for rotors, calipers or other axle parts let me know. I have lots of these parts in my shop and also have access to a wholesale parts ordering software that has dimensioned drawings for lots of parts.

On another note- The 97+ F-150's, expeditions and light duty F-250's use a pretty slick twin piston front caliper that looks like it would be real easy to adapt onto a custom mount, they mount using two large (9/16") or thereabout mounting bolts to the backing plate and have built in floating guides.
