EMERGENCY!!!! HEEELLLP!!!!

HELP!!!!

My truck is dead in the water! I believe the power bandss are to blame, meaning my tranny is fubared. But that's the worries. I need help! My girl is on the side of the freeway at this moment, and I need to get her home! we only have a little 4 banger putt-putt, and can't use that to get it home. I put a big note on the front window with my number to call me before towing it and that I would be back tomorrow (7/4/10) to get it.

Anyway, I have zero dollars, and need to get it home. Anybody able to help me out? I'll be eternally grateful... I just don't want teh city/county to have anohter truck to squish, plus be vehicle less.....

What I'd do:

Go to harbor freight or any tool store, get a tow strap ($20). Get any buddy that has a truck or SUV, and tow the thing off the highway. You say it's on an exit ramp so you won't need to go highway speeds. I've towstrapped on the street before it's no big deal, you just have to be smart about it (at least if your truck does indeed run just put it in neutral and you'll ahve power steering and brakes while being towed). tow it to a parking lot so you can have a bit more time to bring it home. if you were 7 hours closer i'd help you out, but at least with what i've said above, you shouldn't havea problem getting the truck to a parking lot.

check the trans fluid. put the truck in low and reverse and see if those gears will move the truck at all.

Did that. Even bought more and added it since it was low, but it only goes in reverse. no forward movement at all, at least not under the vehicles own power.

And, yeah, my uncle might be able to help me. Ican't do anyhting untilm tomorrow. Hopefully it'll still be on the exit ramp and not towed. If it is, I'll swing by my uncles and use his truck, hopefully he has a tow strap, if not I'll swing by harbor freight. Thanks guys. I've been walking in the sun for 8 hours and couldn't think straight. Hopefully I can get it to either a parking lot or my uncles house.

Well, if it's a C4 you can just adjust the front band screw in all the way to put it in third all the time. The C6 is probably the same way. Loosen the jam nut, run the screw all the way in tight as you can, then lock the nut down. It won't shift, it will start out in drive but it will move under it's own power.

Good luck, and put some truck info in your post if you want specific help...

As long as it isn't blocking traffic flow, I think they give you 24 hours to get it moved. If it is on an exit ramp, it should be fine. When I drove tow in the Silicon Valley, if it disturbed traffic then it would get towed. Getting it off the ramp to someplace better with a tow strap is your best bet.

Ok, I'm back. It's been moved off to a parking lot. Tomorrow we're going to move it to my uncle who lives a few miles from where it's parked now.

I"d like to take a moment and appologise for my goofy post's above... 8 hours in heat and sun will make you goofy. The situation was not as dire as it seemed in my mind. Thank you for your help and support.

Out of curiosity...is it fairly easy to doa tranny rebuild? I've never done anyhitng with a transmission before...just wondering if it'd be better time/money to get a used/rebuilt one, or rebuild mine....

I realize it's a little late for it now but I'd like to offer some advise...get AAA. I have the Premium option, free gas, free 200 mile tow, free vehicle unlock, travel and dining discounts, etc. Mine is about $130 (auto, motorcycle, RV) a year but you can get it for way less. One tow and it pays for itself.
