1972 Ranger XLT

Post by Venado82 »

I've found a '72 Ranger XLT that's been sitting for about a year. I spoke to the son of the owner and he said that he and dad moved it to the panhandle of Texas to fix it up and don't have time to do it. I've pulled the vin and numbers from the ID tag on the door and it's a true Ranger. I didn't have a color code but the color appears to be black and the trim code is "V" which it still has the red interior. The interior is a wreck but all there and the body has a lot of surface rust but is very straight. It still has the original 390 but it doesn't run and the son said they tried to get it running about a year ago and had no compression. My question is what do y'all think its worth? The son said 6 or 7 thousand, which I believe is way to much. My 12 year old son is wanting it for our project for his high school truck. My 13 year old daughter has laid claim to my stock '72 custom and is just itching to drive it to high school. So, what do ya think is a reasonable offer? I'm thinking $1500 or $2000 because it has all the correct, straight trim and the body is straight.

i would go with 1500 since the 390 is gonna need a rebuild since there is no compression. and the body has rust on it your looking at a new paint job. so that can run any where from 2000 to 6000 bucks for those 2 and the interior needs to be redone so that is easily another 1000

Id say $1200 then $1500 if they turn it down. I paid $1,500 for my Ranger, its a 1 owner all original truck, interior wasnt bad but needed restored. Truns runs greatbut is leaking some oil from the valve covers. I think i got a deal, but to me $1,500 is kinda steep for a truck that needs a ton if TLC and a rebuild. My truck does neet a little body work.

i would look around & price others. 1000 to 1500 would be tops of what i think it's worth & i have a '72 ranger xlt short bed which i like very much.
i did not notice if you said short bed or long bed.

Venado, Im thinking your in the ballpark of what its worth, Complete with straight trim and body is worth no more than $2000 because you dont know what else could be wrong with it, brakes, steering, wireing and you say the interior is shot and the engines not running. Sounds like its going to be worth more to the son than to you though. All you can do is make a offer and get turned down at worst. Let us know the outcome of your offer.

I think you are in the ball park as well. Keep in mind much of the Ranger XLT interior is not available reproduction (firewall carpet, door panels, modestly panel). If the original color combination is Black/Red and its truly a 390 it is a very desirable optioned truck.

It will almost certainly cost more to restore than it will be worth.

Crazyhorse, it's a longbed.
Thaks y'all. I know that it's going to be a lot of work but if I can get it the time spent with my son will be priceless to me and to have two children driving bumps would be awesome; even if I have to finish the blazer and drive it for a while. I'm going to be out of town on a mission trip with my youth group next week, so updates will be at least a week away. I'll try to post some pics of the truck when I get back.

i hate giving estimates of what something is worth. especially without any pictures. if the guy said 6-7 thousand i don't knwo you may p him off with a real low offer. but then who knows i didnt talk to him and hear his pitch of voice or his eagar ness in his voice either. did you see the original truck on ebay yet? it is one nice looking truck and has already passed 8000.00 the last time i looked at it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... At the max $1000. Unless it has some super rare options. He's been hittin' the pipe if he says 6-7k.

Be sure to check out the cab mounts, cab corners & floorpans.

Thanks y'all. I posted a "New Family Member" post on the welcome mat. I didn't get the Ranger. I bought a '69 F100 Flareside instead. My son is stoked. I paid $400 for the truck and it runs and drives great. Go check it out.

Bobsgarage...The pics of the maroon and white truck on Facebook are of the '72 Custom that I bought a year or two ago. It's the one that my 8th grade daughter has laid claim to for high school. I paid $1500 for it and I recovered the seats myself. Here's the '69 I paid $400 for

go check it out. I've recently removed the giant tool box from the drivers side.

A couple grand should get you in this ballpark I would think. I know not a 72 XLT Ranger, but it is a 68 Ranger Camper Special. I prefer the 1/2 tons, but this will haul a camper for the wife and me. I did a lot of looking to find this one.
Drove almost 300miles to pick it up. I'm the 2nd owner. I consider it a lucky find. :hd:
Sounds like you made a good buy. Have fun. :woohoo:
