Time for new tires

Post by Mancar1 »

Anyone know the original tire size for the 68 camper special? I know they where 16.5 rims. I now have 16" on there. I would like to get back to the original tire height. The previous owner put LT 285-75-16 10 ply on the back and LT 235-85-16 10 ply on the front. I am going to put the same size all around. Helps at rotation time. Thanks

31" tires are appropriate for any 3/4 ton truck. I would recommend 235/85R16's. This is a hugely popular size that fits a 6-7.5" wide wheel.

I'm using 235/85R16's on mine. Been good so far. I bought mine in about 2002-03? or so, and are still in good
shape. I hate to see the price increase on those.. I paid just under $400 for a set back then.. I'm almost
afraid to look at what they are now.. I've got to get a set on my Corolla pretty soon, and depending on which
brand tire I get, they are almost as much, or even more than that. I'm afraid the days of four small tires for $100
are over... :(
BTW, not all of the F-250's came with 16.5 rims. Some did, but some came with the 16 inch split rims.
That's what mine had when I got it. I took those off and went to solid 16 inch rims. I'd avoid 16.5 tires..
I almost bet they cost more money vs the more popular 16 inchers.

I put 265/75R16s on my rear. The front has 235/85s on them and I think I'll replace them with the same size.
I wanted a slightly larger and more aggressive tire for the rear because of the road conditions around here.

I buy my truck tires on treadwright.com. The do retreads for about $90/tire. Good quality, too. I bought a full set of five 265/75R16 BFG All Terrains for my Ram back in December. I've gone over 10,000 miles on them with no problems. I've never gotten stuck and the wear is even and good.

I'm not sure if my truck has the original rims or not. They are 16s. They look a lot like most other rims of the era. My mom's bf has a 78 E250 and the rims are the same. However, there is a Dodge/Chrysler star stamped in the spare rim. I noticed that while examining the underside of my truck. I didn't notice the star on the other rims.

Could be a dodge rim. Two of mine are. The bolt pattern fits, but the stud holes are
very slightly larger on the dodge rims, vs the ford. If I remember right anyway.
So I would prefer ford rims if possible. But dodge will work. I think I've been keeping
my dodge rims on the rear so far. Haven't had any problems yet.

I really hope those are typos. My girlfriends cobalt has bigger tires than that, stock.
