Something terrible I have discovered

Post by blackford72 »

Yesterday my dad and I went to a couple of junk yards to look for parts and a guy who owned one of them told us about a guy who took a 1972 Ford pickup and turned it into a demolition derby truck, I was mad. What you think of this?

A local guy who runs an annual derby had a combine feature a few years back. They even had a BBC film crew doing a film on it.

I bet it put up a good fight in that derby  hey i was in a wreck in my 71. it was kinda like being in a derby, i was going about 30 approaching a green light. The cross traffic got the right turn on red light, so the car on the left side of the intersection turned right and it made the dubm broad who was gonna go straight just take off. Basically she ran the light and right into my left front fender. :x

sometimes if they are gone enough derbying is fine. now if it is one in mint or near mint condition he's nutz but it is his right to do with it as he sees fit.

unless it was in good shape I don't see the big deal about it.

Back in the early 90's truck racing started to get popular at dirt tracks. Our local 3/8ths mile oval was no exception. Many a bump and dent were turned into race trucks. To this day it's almost impossible to find bump parts at the local junk yards. One yard has 2 bumps, but he will not sell parts off of them. He will sell them whole at just under gold prices. The other yard has 2 bumps as well, but theres not much that is useable that is left on them (for me anyways).

Back in the 70's my dad cut up a 66 & 69 chevele malibu SS and stock carred them. Before the malibu era it was 55 chevies. I'm guilty of it as well. I was given a 79 Z28 (no title) that got turned into a stock car. The body was perfect. The bottom line is they can't all be saved. I'd rather see a bump as a stock car or demolition derby vehicle, than rusting away in some field. At least someone has taken the initiative to do something with it and enjoy it before it got crunched and sent off to china.

It depends where you are located. Some places I've been have had as many as 15 bumps in their yard and this was in the past year. Most of the time they are stripped of most useful or valuable parts, but sometimes I've come across some complete trucks in junk yards. I hate to see good bumps go to waste, but if its gonna sit and rust to pieces, use it in a race. Much better to go down in a demo derby than to be used as a fun target in a shootin' range as I've seen before.

I guess it just depends on location. A running bump or dent in beater shape will sell for $500 or so around here so there is not much reason not to derby it if thats what you like to do. I like these old trucks but value wise they don't have any right now. maybe they will be the next big deal. lol
