how much gas do you buy at a time
Probaly a stupid thread but why not. When you go to buy gasoline do you fill the vehicle up or just put a little in. I rarely fill up unless I am going somewhere. I usually buy around $10 worth. I think the most I have bought at once was $40

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
For our daily drivers, I pretty much always fill them up every time. But we do a lot of driving with them, and I like them to be ready to go all the time.
For the others, we just put a little in at a time as we don't drive them much and I don't want the gas sitting in them too long.

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
When we first got our '99 Suburban a few months ago I used to put almost 40 gallons at a time. Yes, I ran it almost empty. Now the wife is the one driving it and I don't really know how much gas she puts in at a time. Itend to put 5, 10 and sometimes 20 dollars in my truck. I guess 3 or 4 times a week depending on where I drive the thing. It's the '92 Chevy 1500 LWB and a V8. Gas has dropped back below $2.50 per gallon here in San Antonio. I really like the even number. So I put in 2 or 4 gallons usually. Today I'll probably put an even 10 gallons because I am taking her on a trip over 100 miles tonight.

I usually fill up at 1/4 of a tank. I park on a slope to the drivers side so I don't fill up all the way or it will over flow when parked.

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
My '71 race truck is my daily driver.
I never fill the tank, unless at a race. To fill the tank, it is $105. Forget that....
I put $20 every time. I guess money would be saved in the long run if you put more in at once, so you didn't have to drive out of your way to get to a gas station and back on route.
I like to run out of gas on the side of the street too.

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
I rarely fill my truck up.. Even though I know it all comes out the same in the end,
that initial large bite is too scary for me to deal with.. :/ Also, at the moment I
don't have a locking gas cap on it.. I don't want 20 gallons of gas walking off in
gas cans.
But it would actually be better if I did fill it all the way up. Especially in the winter.
You have much less water condensation and tank rust if you keep it full most of the time.
I'm more likely to fill the car being as it doesn't cost as much. It also has a locking door
over the gas cap. Just a twenty will almost fill that thing if it's got a little left in the tank
when I fill it.. Even bone dry and on E, it only takes about $30 at the current $2.50 a gallon.
Of course, on the highway traveling, I always fill to the brim no matter what I'm driving.

Run the main tank to 1/2, switch to aux. tank, run it to 1/2. Then I fill em.

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
I always fill my vehicles if I can afford the $40-$70.
I track my fuel economy (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/oren09) so I try to fill up each time.

Re: how much gas do you buy at a time
I usually don't buy more than $5 at a time
. Then again that's because the '71 isn't being daily driven right now, and it only gets fired up/driven around the neighborhood once or twice a week so too much more than $5 and the gas would sit way too long before it all got burnt up
.
