house AC replace

Post by c130enginetroop »

well found out my inattic fan coil is leaking (replacment part 1800 + laber and charge so 2000 total) New carrier air handler is 1950 installed and charged. so then I started thinking about changing the outside unit at the same time and have both done. 3 Ton carrier for TOTAL= 4600 and i get a tax break for being energy eff.. So they are coming to install it on Wed next week. price should come down since they put things in the quote that may not be needed but wanted me to have the worst case issuses quote. so if anyone is looking for a 2.5 ton outside heatpump (goodman) can run for you before wed asking 450.00. damn owning a house sucks some times.

Are you switching to a standard A/C or are you getting another heat pump? Does the air handler have an electric auxillary heating coil, or does the heat pump alone do the job for you down there in GA?

yeah seems like alot of money but i called train and they said 5800 installed. the total price with tax brake and all should be around 3000 installed, so i will go with a carrier (my brother used to work for them). I just don't want to spend the money on a lower brand one like the one i got now. Before you say it I know they are made by the same people most of the time but with 10 years of warrenty and a service plan that they come out and clean the coils9(inside and outside) twice a year and give me free filters i can't bet it, plus it is a 15 seer unit that is alot better then the 9 seer unit i have now.

I have a heat pump know that has electric heat strips in the air handler in the attic, and it works great during the winter, so thats what i am going back with. with the unit i have now i can set it at 78 and it wil stay at 82 in the house during the summer and run about 16 hours a day, so i am hoping it will work less and bring down my bill. I would have waited till after the first of the year but the tax rebate ends 31 dec, plus it was 80 degrees on christmas here last year, so i want to beable to use it if needed. also if i had all of the equipment my would do it myself with my brother helping me but we don't and i really don't want to fool with it, when they can come in and get it done inless then a day.

We install Trane equipment and a complete heat pump system with electric heat and the air handler being in the attic would definetly cost about what you are paying here in the St. Louis area. I don't think you're getting took. It's good you're getting to take advantage of the tax credits and rebates; that's what's driving a lot of our business right now.

The goverment tax brake will only actually give you 1/3 of the brake stated in money returned. If you get a $3000 tax brake it will come off your gross earnings when fileing taxes and if your in the 33% ( a guess) tax bracket than of that $3000 you would only get 33% returned to you because that what youve paid in taxes. The other 67% was given to you in your paycheck. The goverment tax brake will only give you $1000 off the price youve got.

Wow, that's really surprising to hear. We switched to Trane from York about 5 years ago because we had so much warranty work going on and customers were not impressed. Since the switch to Trane warranty work is almost nil. In fact our service guys complain that there isn't as much work. The idea that you've had anything fail in the three years you've had the system is a surprise, but I suppose any company has a lemon now and then...

The maximum tax credit for air conditioning systems is $1500.
Make sure you get the certificate that shows the whole system's parts
and that they qualify for the credit as a system. This is very important.
This is called the "Manufacturer Certification Statement".
Without that you will be SOL..
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=t ... s.tx_index
Also, to qualify, the system must be rated at 16 SEER, and 13 EER,
or it won't qualify.
That price is a tad high for the "usual" lower SEER rated system, but if
it's actually a 16 SEER rated system, that price is probably OK.
But make sure it is! The A/C company can not guaranty that you will
get the credit, so double check with who prepares your taxes to make sure.
If at the end of the year you find it won't qualify, you will be out of luck,
and pretty much nothing you will be able to do about it.
BTW, the SEER rating is the estimated seasonal efficiency rating.
The EER rating is it's efficiency at a single temp. "95 degrees".
Again, make double sure they give you the Manufacturer Certification
Statement which will include all the parts of that system.
Most furnaces have to be rated at 95 AFUE, but yours is electric
with strips. So make sure it all qualifies.

I had a Trane system installed about 7 years ago, and I promise it will be the last of my money Trane will ever see. :nono: Spent over 5K, got a programmable thermostat and electronic air filter (that alone was right at a grand). SUPPOSEDLY a "top-of-the-line" system,

Like bobbyinpd, I've had all sorts of problems, and it's not getting any better. :x :x :x

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!
