1971 f250 camper special 360 2bbl c6

Post by cozadlance »

Bought her 4 months ago in banks Oregon. Just thought it was a way to get a vehicle that I could camp with that would not need d.e.q. I liked ford as much as anything, but not any more than anything else and knew nothing of these trucks' history --
THEN I FELL IN LOVE.

Wish like heck I had taken pictures then. Just got a new camera, looking to do pics tomorrow after the wheel cylinders get replaced.
Anyway, I bought her for $400 -- Bad, bald, rotting 16.5 tires on budd rims, No spare, a few broken grease zerks. She had bad plugs, points, condenser and wires. Differential was almost empty and what there was was thick as mud and chunky. Tow hitch was missing. No horns, no horn relay. Leaking brake booster and both rear wheel cylinders and all the rear brake lines leaked. 2 Busted exhaust manifold bolts (classic, yes?) NO TAILGATE, no jack, no lug wrench. Most of her lighting system was not working and several signal bezels were cracked or just gone. Rust in the cab corners. Headliner was moldy and cracked. Weatherstripping was nonexistent. No key for the door locks. She idled badly at 1100 rpm or not at all and backfired often. Oil all over the manifold and down the block too.
Starter and coil dying, voltage regulator was the FACTORY UNIT, Carb was varnished to crap and leaking, with air filter and housing missing. God only knows how old the oil was in the engine. It smelled kinda like gear oil and was jet black and lumpy. Seats ripped to hell, instrument cluster smashed up, cracked dash.
Exhaust leaks everywhere...hole in muffler -- noisy Ujoints... she was a mess and hurting badly and I had my girlfriend thinking I was nuts when I handed over the cash. The body is straight as an arrow though and the tranny works beautifully from day one except for the broken linkage a few weeks ago.

The above save the exhaust and wheel cylinders, booster are pretty much dealt with and I can post pics now. I am starting to feel like I actually can begin to make a recording of my progress. I was a bit embarrassed at first and felt a bit stupid but I am feeling o.k. now. Trying to pay more attention to where I post, sorry about that :P

seems i have a problem putting the tools down long enough to do the pictures... making a point of doing a few this weekend in addition to swapping out an exhaust manifold. fwiw i am now on forum as cozadlance2. some weird troubles with the cozadlance account that careful typing wouldn't fix... dunno. anyway, thanks TNicewolf.

no door key, how'd you turn thr truck on? should be the same key.

Good god i sound like the biggest meanie with that post. I'm sorry i only meant to convey that on these trucks and alot of ford and linc/merc cars, the ignition and door key are one in the same. And on the cars only the Glove and trunk are on the round headed key.

oh, hey, np. apparently the ignition had been changed, but the door lock not. not sure, but the ign key don't open the door. i did find the door key, later, inside the bezel for a brake light in the parts box in the camper it came with.

fuel gauge is ALMOST on the job... I did half turn increments at a time to ipvr over several weeks... when the screw finally bottomed out and would go no further, the temp gauge was spot on, as tested externally... oil was a bit high but good enough, the alt was basically dead as usual...lol... and the fuel gauge read just shy of full after a fillup where fuel spurted out of the filler pipe. so do i now bend the sending unit's float rod up a tad? sending unit goes full peg "f" on grounding... i.p.v.r. is cranked out to max... hmmm,,,,

thx -- full gauges 1971 f250 cs 360 2v c6 3 spd w dana 60 OPEN (3.73) tires are 245/75/R16
