Electric furnace

Post by RTG_RACING »

Anyone think of a reason one couldn't be mounted to the celing of a shop sideways?

As long as it doesn't have an ati-tip feature, and you are not using anything in the area of it that may go CA-Boom. Then why not. (It depends on what type of elec heater you are talking about. They do make them for shops.)

OK to add a bit more. I bought a small electric furnace to heat a section of my shop this winter. It's small enought that one could mount it to the celing sideways and save some floor space.

Depends on what you are paying per KwHr... Cheaper to run oil here or maybe NG if the prices hold.

I run oil in the garage, thermo set to 40` bolted to the unit itself. Just to keep the mill coolant from freezing. Nice because a 110k BTU unit heats the 24x28x8 garage from 40-70 in under 20 munutes.

Electric heater probably has a tip switch. If not close to level, heater won't run.

Since heat rises, mounting to ceiling won't be very efficient. It cost me $3 per day to run 1500 watt heater in 24x24' insultated shop in 30 to 50 degree weather. Pretty expensive.

I use a good ole airtight woodstove. Gives me somewhere to get ride of my wood working scrapes. Works great, shop is 24' X 34'. course the day will most likely come when there will be no more wood burning. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

If you are talking about a residential type electric air handler with a heat package in it then there will be no problem setting it on it's side. Hundreds of thousands of them are set horizontally in attics across the country. The only concern is where the drain for the coil is, but if you have no coil and/or have no plans for a/c in the future then you won't have to worry about that. You will need 240v, however, and possibly two breakers depending on the kw of the heat package.

Yes this is what I have and now it's sitting on the floor taking up space. Thanks for the answer.

Yep, I can't think of any reason a heat strip air handler would have a problem
in any position except for possible evap coil drain issues if you ran a coil for
A/C. Many are convertible as far as mounting the coil vertical, or horizontal,
but I'm sure some positions would be a problem as far as the coil drain pan
being under the coil, and being able to drain.
But it sounds like you are thinking heat only maybe, so it should be ok.
