Value of my 71 F100
Not for sell, yet. Just looking for general info if I decided to sell, so I'm posting here.
As bad as I hate to, I am considering selling my 71 F100. I still have the 72 I restored, but I'm looking to purchase something newer as I discussed on the forums earlier. It is a Ranger model and is overall in excellent condition. The top of the hood has surface rust covering most of it, and the floor boards would need to be replaced. Under the battery has a small area that is rusted out as well. This has always been a Texas truck, and everywhere else, the truck is in exceptional condition. The cab mounts, cab corners, bed corners, and everything underneath is in excellent condition. It spent almost all of it's life with a camper shell on it, so the bed is in really great shape. There are a few dings and dents, but nothing major. All in all very straight. I bought it from the original owners wife after he had passed away. The seat is nearly perfect, and the rest of the interior is decent. The truck is a daily driver now. I put a rebuilt 360 in it with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, with all new rings, bearings, cam, cam bearings, lifters, pushrods, etc. Heads were rebuilt with hardened seats. Everything was cleaned and magnafluxed. Engine runs good and is strong. There is an oil leak at the back of the intake I just haven't taken the time to address. The carburetor needs to be either tuned, rebuilt, or replaced, because the truck backfires through the carb (holley 1850, I think- only 2 years old) when too much throttle is applied when it is cold outside and the truck hasn't warmed up. New alternator, hoses, belts, radiator, power steering pump, battery. All gauges and accessories work properly. Intermittent wiper switch installed last year. Powertrax traction control system($475 alone) in a freshened up rear axle(new brakes, wheel bearings, seals). C-6 Transmission professionaly rebuilt 2 years ago. Cd Player installed with custom mounted dual JBL 4" speakers mounted in stock single speaker location. 75% tread on rear tires- Maxxis Mudder's, I think. New tires will be needed soon on front- kingpins need to be replaced if you expect to get more than 10-15K from a set of front tires. I have removed most of the trim from the truck, but I have it- most in really good condition. The truck also has a working ARA heat and air setup. Needs new compressor, but I have an extra that might work I'd send with it. I will try to get some pics up in the next few days. I'm looking for fair market value, not "I have to sell it today" prices. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I will give my thoughts,
for what they are worth,
on the truck after you post pics.
Well maybe a thought or two now. I will say that after reading what you say about it. Maybe you should replace excellent with overall good cond. I consider mine in good condition. The preceding announcment is just my opinion.

Re: Value of my 71 F100
Sounds to me like you've put some effort into her. I'd love to see a photo or two before I post judgement. Based on the description you've supplied, it's could be a $6k or $1k truck. I agree with Mancar. Perhaps take that excellent off and put it as in good/very good overall. Just another guys opinion.

Re: Value of my 71 F100
You are probably correct about the good/very good. Obviously from the description, it's not a "survivor". The truck has 122,000 miles on it and was driven- still is. It's definitely not a 6K truck. With some very minor body work and a fresh coat of paint, it would make a very nice daily driver, though. A few mechanical problems would need attention as well. I I'm looking at it like this: This same truck, in our area, will go for ~$1500 in this condition appearance wise, with original engine, transmission, etc- all due a rebuild. So, you could buy one for that amount, spend $400 on a transmission rebuild, another $1,000 or more on a complete engine rebuild, $500 or better on new hoses, belt, radiator, battery, etc., $400 on seat reupholstery, radio, speakers, etc., $1000 on a a rear axle rebuild with locker installed, and the list goes on. Now, I know that with these old trucks, you don't get your money back out of them in any way. But I also won't sell a truck with all of this done for the same price it was worth before any of this was done. I've got probably around 6K in it- maybe more, but wouldn't expect more than maybe the $3k I mentioned.Sparx Macgyver wrote:Sounds to me like you've put some effort into her. I did find some pics of the 72 where you can get an idea of what the truck is(the 71 I'm talking about is the blue one in the background)- keep in mind that the hood you won't see in these pics is covered in surface rust.

Re: Value of my 71 F100
Around here you could probably get between $2000. and $2,400. Times are hard so it may take a while to sell at that price. Start at your $3,000. You might get it, and you can always come down to meet an offer. That makes the buyer feel like they are getting the better deal. I have found this works well when selling something. Always lets the buyer think he or she is in control.
A few years back I had a 73 that I put over $6,000 into and if you include what I paid for it, $8400. Needed $$$$$ so I sold it. Was lucky to get $2300. out of the truck. Your right when you say you won't get out what you put in. Just remember that all you did to your truck was a labor of
Good luck with the sale.

My thoughts are to put stock intake and carb back on it and put a stock open rear end under, since I have all of those things, then take 2,000-2400 if nobody will pay 3,000 as is. I could sell those 3 parts and get another $750 or so out of it, I think.
What's funny, though, is if I did that, the new owner would possibly make some of those very same changes within a year or two at double the expense and lots of bloody knuckles.

Forgot to mention that it has a Pertronix Ignitor II in it and the previous owner put disc brakes on the front. Still haven't had time to take pics. Maybe this weekend.

Re: Value of my 71 F100
So, you paid $2400, did $6000 worth of upgrades, then sold it for $2300?????? I thought I'd be doing bad paying $2,000, making $4000 worth of improvements, and selling for $3000.Mancar1 wrote:Around here you could probably get between $2000. and $2,400. Re: Value of my 71 F100
Yes, swap stuff out then sell. Leaving the goodies on probably won't make any differnce in the price. Do not do what I did and let all the goodies go with the truck. You will regret it latter, like I do now.dustman_stx wrote:So, you paid $2400, did $6000 worth of upgrades, then sold it for $2300?????? If I hadn't bought the 68 a few months back. We would be talking about that truck of yours
Of course I'd want all the goodies
I take on 1 truck at a time. That way the wife stays happy and doesn't mind at all.

Re: Value of my 71 F100
I might end up offering it in the classifieds. I really hate to. The truck is ideal for either a complete restoration or some basic upgrades to make it a really nice daily driver. I can't afford to insure/inspect/register/maintain it to keep it on the road along with another daily driver. And it'll likely be so many years before I'd have the money to do anything with it restoration wise that it'd just deteriorate. Thanks for the input and advice.Mancar1 wrote:If I hadn't bought the 68 a few months back. We would be talking about that truck of yoursOf course I'd want all the goodies

Decided to go ahead and offer it for sale in the forum classifieds. Will try to post pics ASAP.
