Im thinking out loud... what do YOU think?

Post by jzjames »

For sale is a nice original green shortbed nearby, probably a '68, that I stopped and looked at a while ago. It caught my eye because it had the nice bed, no rust on the seams. Only rust is the bottoms of the door corners are just starting to rust through, typical for here.
Fender bottoms are not rusted and the cab mounts are solid.

Problem is the 360 loses oil pressure, so the engine is probably no good, but it still drives. I could get it home without towing.

Soo., the month before Cristmas I could likely get it for $750. I keep thinking this would be a nice shortbed to restore, but then I'd have to do alot of work and find a good engine.

Good deal? what do ya think?? :?

Without seeing it that doesn't seem like a bad price.
In my opinion FEs don't need much oil pressure for just driving normally.
Change the oil and filter, pour in a can of Restore and drive it until you save up enough for a fresh engine. :2cents:

I'd do it in a heartbeat. If the compression is steady across all eight holes I'd just pull the motor pop the pan and put a high volume oil pump in it and forget about it until I had a 390 to drop in.

You guys are spoiled :)

:yt: Mr Jzjames, I hope you get it .
That sounds like an excellent deal.
You might fix that motor pretty reasonable,
if not there are lots of different motors to be had
at reasonable prices.
The beauty of these old Bumps is easy to work on,lots & lots of different parts,
best looking truck on the road, drives & rides good, tough as pig iron( built Ford tough),
can be built to suit your taste, from 6 cylinder all the way to a stroked & bored 460.
So get that bump & get started on it.

My thoughts? The owner would become the previous owner and the truck would be on a tiltbed headed for my house in about an hour. :)

I agree. For a truck without major rust problems, even WITHOUT a motor it's still worth the asking price. You could get good running used engine for a couple hundred bucks and spend a weekend dropping it in and still have under a grand invested. Do it!

Is this the one I saw down close to Bremerton the other day? Dark green shortbed, pretty sure it was a `68, and pretty rust-free looking.

Bingo! I talked to this guy who is a mechanic, I'm pretty sure it must need a new engine, and it would be pretty much body and drivetrain.
Price is $900 but it's been for sale a while. Its solid and brakes are good.... :hmm:
Dont buy it until I decide in the next few...

Trust me, if I was gonna buy it, it would have happened last spring when I first saw it for sale.

I've always wanted a short bed bump, but I've got too many other things going on the last couple years, and my truck is project enough for now.

Good luck, hope you get it. I think it is definitely worth what he's asking, and really surprised it has been sitting there this long. Guess people are wanting something they can get in and go, rather than projects, right now.

Sounds like a good deal to me...

FE's are pretty tolerant of abuse and low oil pressure, at most bearings and rings would probably make it a driver.

I would jump on the green longbed here localy if i had 6k so to get one that needs at most an engine maybe a little more, for 600-900 i'd snap it up. even if it only got body work and ran around the block once a week, sounds like it could easily be old gasket material caught in the oil drain holes in the heads or a plugged filter, hell if he is using newer Federal Mogul/Fram filter with the anti drain back stuff it could be that alone get a wix or Ford/Motorcraft FL-1A and see if it works out. after that its suspect of the filter housing, pump, pickup screen or at worst plugged oiling holes in the bearings or bad rings.
