On the 23rd my father in law passed away,he was 86 and it was quick and as painless as you can hope for.
So now my wife and I are the leaders of our clan,we have been caring for my father in law for 6 years before that we cared for mt parents till they passed away.
So in reality we have been in command for 15 years....so why do I feel like a 10 year old on my own for the first time?
It is a very strange feeling you would think at 48 that I should have a better grasp on this but it appears that I dont.
Just needed to vent...
Steve.

Hey, sorry for your loss. Had some tough losses myself and who doesn't feel odd/different in the days following. there's a void when someone passes and that is odd/different. I'd take some time to deal and to grieve before striking the gavel on who or where I am. Judging by the way you took care of everyone in their time of need, I'll bet that clan of yours is still in good hands. Godspeed on the days ahead

Re: Life and death...is it just me?
I feel your sorrow. I lost my mother last year. She was my light, my heart, and my best friend. Even now, writing this, I get all misty thinking about her. At 50 years old, I was still her baby. She suffered with rheumatoid arthritis for the last 20 years and died of congestive heart failure but woke up every morning looking forward to each day with a smile on her face and a song in her heart. Except for my brother (we're not very close) I'm the last of my family. My brother has a son to carry on the name, I've got all girls so my branch ends with me. But my mother's memory will live on in all whom she touched. Remember them with love and know they're in a better life now.

Loss hits us all differently and in strange ways, for you, the first set of parents passing wasn't so lonely, becuase you still had the inlaws to walk/talk you through it, Now you are the Walker/Talker for eveyone else.

I feel for you. Hang in there. I've lost friends and family. More than one I was a care giver for. I had guilty feelings for having time to do things that I could't do before.

Re: Life and death...is it just me?
Wow!!! Sorry to hear, our prayers are with you.
My wife and I have been increadiblt blessed as at 50 I still have both my parents who are both 80 and she has both of her's who are 85 & 82. They have also been blessed as they all are living in their own homes and doing quite well. We've had close calls over the years but as of now all is well. They are all strong Christians so they don't fear passing on to be with Jesus some day. They treat each day as a gift.
I had a very good friends of mine years ago who had just lost the last of their parents and he said, like you, it is never the same. It changes you! We talked about it quite a bit and he said a lot of the same as you. He was no better prepared. You are not alone.
I pray God's Peace and Understanding, as only He can give, be with you and your family. That your parents will never leave your families hearts and let your minds be filled with all the laughs and fun you had together. That God would Bless you with His wisdom and Grace so you may always lead your family wisley.
God Bless,
Ed
