I will let you know when it gets hot again. The 68 has dealer add-on. I have to get it up and running prior to next summer.

I bought a old air products one from a member here but I don't have it in. I likely won't have it in for 2 summers but it will be nice when it is done.

the air unit that was dealer installed in my dads old 72 was pretty good. it was the full kind that crossed over to the drivers side under the steering column.

Don't have one in mine.. But I've been in a lot of cars that used under dash
A/C units, and have never noticed a problem. Really not much difference
from a factory "in dash vent" job once the truck is cooled down.
A lot of cars had those way back in the 60's. We had a few, and I remember
my uncle had a 1965 or so Fairlane that had under dash A/C. No problems
cooling the car down. Back then, a lot of people had that added to cars
that didn't come with A/C from the factory. You don't see it as much now
as most all cars come with A/C unless it's some kind of fluke.. :/
I think the first one my dad had was on a 61 Rambler American that we had
for a while. "61-62 or so.." It was just one center unit, but worked pretty
well. You are pretty much getting the same BTU cooling as most, it's just the
vents aren't as spread apart. And that really is no big deal once it gets cooled
down.

Got an old Climate Air underdash unit for the 68 when it gets done. Thru the grapevine, the trick seems to be use the largest evaporator you can use, and bump the size of the lines for a little more refrigerant capacity.

as always... :2cents:

Try and keep the evaporator matched to the compressor and condenser. It's ok to go a little bit bigger on the evap but i wouldn't go more than 10% of the btu rating.

i remember at a car show or something seeing "the first in car a/c unit" it was a little fan /vent that had ice filling the top and as air would blow through i guess the ice cooled it and such...no clue if it worked on not...didn't really look all that well
