Classic Cars Rotting

Post by sargentrs »

Especially for you Georgia boys like me. This place is called Old Car City and is around Cartersville, GA. And yes, it is real and they love to show their place off....... Take the tour online and search the hundreds of old/classic vehicles. Some are literally in trees that have grown up in them. And you can buy parts from them!

'Fraid so Caseys. Somewhere in there is, I think, a GTO about 15 ft up in a tree. Saw it once a couple of years ago but can't find it anymore. Tree grew up under it and lifted it up with it. Cool. Friend of mine went there a couple of years ago looking for a project "Effie" body. 50's era F100(?) Said the guy offered him any 5 bodies he wanted for $1000. He passed in favor of a '68 GTO body from somewhere else though. Never actually been there myself but I've talked to 'em on the phone getting directions. Then my wife found something more important for me to do that weekend. I think they charge a couple of dollars admission just to walk around but they are a salvage yard so stuff is for sale. At least was anyway. I haven't been in touch with them in about 2 years.

That place DOES exist! It is located on old highway 321 or 441 heading north out of Cartersville. I used to live in a town called Fairmont right between Ranger and White on that road back when I first got out of the army back in 92. I worked in a diesel shop in Cartersville back then and that place was on my way to and from work every day. Miss Yvonne and I took a trip down there a while back and sure enuff it was still there. They have done some road name switching since then but it is one or the other yet. 321 seems to stick for some reason. As I recall they have complete restoreable vehicles stacked in sheds as well. Pretty darned neat place!!!

I'm guessing they only left the un repairables out there to get rooted. The realy good stuff and decent stuff went into dry/storage.

I'm afraid this is a common thing where I live (about 50 miles west of Charlotte). I'm not talking about junkers either, I'm talking about cars and trucks that were in good running condition when they were parked. All the time I see ads, especially on ebay, that state "barnfind" or N.C. or Georgia car, but I don't understand where they're finding them because no one around here will sell a darn thing. They usually rot to the ground. Not a mile from my house is a "66 Ford 7 litre, one family owned that has been sitting out in the weather for 15 years or so and over the past couple years it has started to go down fast. Same guy had two "65 or '66 F-100's stored in an old chicken house. Well, last year snow and ice collapsed the roof and they are still buried under the rubble. A widow near me let at least a dozen early 50's ford coupes and six '55 or '56 victorias rot to the ground before she would sell just because her husband collected them and never would sell one. The story goes on and on. The other problem here, is that anyone who will sell, thinks their piece of crap fairlane or mustang is worth what the cars on Barrett-Jackson are bringing. Heck, I'm the opposite. I'll sell anything before I watch it go to waste.

Down on the river at one of my favorite Salmon fishing spots. There are some vehicle bodies protruding from the bank. They date back to the 20's and 30's. Just rusting away. No one is allowed on the property to check them out. So ya just sit and fish a few yards away. I'm sure way back the bodys where placed there to help buck up the bank. The name of the fishing hole of course is, "The Car Bodys."

That dude should know that the song was sung by Littlefield, Texas's own Waylon Jennings.
