How do you fix the fuel inlet ?

Post by thefordguy »

Hi, I bought a 1972 F350 Camper last week - I love it! It needs a lot of work, but it will be a lot of fun when it gets restored. When I pour fuel in the main tank it leaks immediately to the ground. The leak seems to be in the hose before it joins the auxillary tank hose. The problem is, there is a propane tank mounted right there. And I don't think the propane tank can be removed. I see that there seems to be a large metal cover over the main gas tank - if I remove this - would I be able to get access to the fuel line?

edit. the aux tank filler hose goes between the bed and frame. that propane tank should be able to come off unless soemone welded it to the frame. in order to drop the tank to get at the hose without pulling the propane tank you wont be able to get at the hose either. the propane tank or bed will have to come off.

The Main gas tank is the one behind the seat. The one under the bed is the Aux tank. Is the leak coming from inside the steel plate covering the gas tank under the bed or does it look like it's coming from one of the fuel lines?

Pics would help, sounds like you may have the same setup as me. I have straps where the propane tank used to be. If it is the underbed tank I had a similar problem. Had a leak in the filler hose.

yeah, it looks to me that the propane tank is welded to the lateral supports that run from side to side of truck. When I pour gas into the filler tube, it leaks almost inline with the filler tube, and when I looked underneath the filler tube pretty high up was wet with the fuel. Also, the fuel gage isn't working if I fill up the auxillary tank. Is that a sign that the gage is bad or is the gage only set up to work on the main tank. There is not auxilary gage switch under the dash.

I believe you are missing the switch for that tank. Is your filler neck above the bump line or below it? From what I have read it sound like the filler neck is the problem. Probably dried out and cracked around the hose clamp...

:yt: You have to have a switch to go from from tank to tank sending units for checking the fuel, (not too hard to wire in if it's not there). And here's the fuel tank sending unit info:

I just had to replace the float in my in sending unit, (and was very thankful I still have the in cab tank)!

Front Tank R&R for F350

Post by thefordguy »

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me a few tips on repairing the front tank and snorkel. Does all work take place underneath the truck or is there some access from inside the cabin?

I've mentioned my issue in a previous thread - I've just been putting off doing this work cuz it looks like a pain. There is a leak somewhere from the snorkel to the tank. I'm not sure the best way to remove the tank since it has some kind of metal cover around it, and the propane tank is under the snorkel connection to the tank.

I don't think there is an easy way. My '70 F350 doesn't have the bed and you can access the fill tubing right behind the cab. My suggestion would be unbolt the bed and lift it up or drop the shield and tank.

is the tank directly attached to the shield, or is it connected to the tank? I'm just curious about how heavy it will be when it comes off.

Usually manufacturers strap the tank to the frame crossmembers and then bolts the shield around it. Not sure if they did in these trucks though.
