This was on the radio yesterday.
It's a total hoax. The plant is perfectly safe, and functioning properly. You guys are being taken by a Viagra strength scam. Probably put out by those who hate nuclear power in any of it's forms.

Pics of the Ft Calhoun plant, and others in here. Why you're not hearing about this, is because farmers deal with it instead of screaming about the government hating them. I'll shaddup now.

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
The issue here i would believe is the time frame of how long they were without power. Most folks don't realize you don't just throw cold water on nuclear reactor rods to cool them. It takes time-and has to be done slowly to be done properly and safely! I had to learn this many years ago as emergency protocol, (as well as how to fire up the reactor).
Yes it could just be another tree-hugger crying to shut down all the nuke plants, but we'll probably never know as the NRC aint' just gonna' call CBS if there's a leak!
My God help the "little man" / the farmers and residents there that have been affected by this.

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
The plant has been offline since April for a planned refueling. There was NO fire, and NO flooding has occurred at the plant. The entire story is BS!

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
I wouldn't say it was a total scam. I worked in the Nuclear plant industry for 14 years. 11 or so years working on the actual generators and the rest working on the electrical switch gear that sent power to all areas of the plants. Even worked on the back up generators several times. Worked on other plants besides the company I worked for also.
I was privy to the lists they sent out everyday of the power plants that had trouble the day before. You would be surprised at the length of that list at times. Turkey Point was on there a lot as well as Fermi and many others I no longer remember the names of. If I remember right there were 4 classes of emergency situations. At least two or three times a week there would be an emergency at some plant here in the states. I still believe most of the plants are safe BUT they are all getting old. The plants here in NC and SC were to be in operation for 20 years. Three I know of are way past that and keep getting a new license to operate. We need these plants or the cost of electricity will go out the roof for us. NOt just us but the automakers, food producers, anybody that uses electricity to produce a product we buy to survive.
Kind of scary ain't it?

Hoax or not, if they scream five alarm fire for a 1 alarmer, you'll never get out of the way of a real five alarmer. Kinda what happened on the 22 of may here in joplin, we have had so many close call air raid/tornado sirens going off over the years most had to see the storm to understand it was real.
heck 2 years in a row they thing hit down in Newton and mcdonald counties. Same warnings.

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
I have never worked at one and really have very little knowledge on the subject. I do find an interest in how almost everything works and operates, especially something like that. So my knowledge on it is limited to the basic outline of how they function.
However, I do find it fascinating. The technology around atomic power seems to have ground to a halt or at least slowed down to a snail's pace. It seems odd that we have not found other uses for it in a safer and smaller package.
Back in the late 50's, Ford had a concept car called the "Nucleon". I do believe that it never made it past model stage. The idea was based upon someone coming up with a very small reactor. It would be like the one on a sub, but much smaller of course, that and the hope that someone would also come up with lighter shielding material. It would be driven by a steam turbine and generator. The steam would be condensed and reused in a closed loop.
Of course...crashing the car would have some slight side affects like an orange afro and an arm growing out of your ear. It just seems to me, we would be closer to some way to use it in a smaller and much safer form by now. I have a phone that will mow my grass and send a holographic image of me to follow around the ol'lady while she looks for clothes...Well, I used to have that, but the hologram committed suicide a couple weeks ago.
Anyway, I wonder why we have reached a stand still with it.

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
I don't know what the country is going to do. After the Japan accident I doubt they'll build any more Nuclear plants here in the states and the President doesn't seem to be backing it. They don't want to burn coal oil or propane and there sure isn't enough rivers to use Hydro power. Geo Thermal, wind and solar isn't enough. We need Nuclear but then there is the spent fuel to deal with and that is a mess. We can't keep putting it in the ground here and hoping something doesn't cause it to get in the ground water or the air.
I don't think there has been enough interest in other forms of energy at all. There has got to be a better way
How did all of the science fiction movies and comic books have us making power in 2011?
Laugh but many of the things they put in the movies back then have sure come to be.

Re: Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant in Nebraska
Nuclear reactors have two separate cooling loops. A primary (totally sealed from atmosphere and sealed from the secondary loop as well-which encompasses the reactor itself). And a secondary loop, (usually seawater/river water) that flows through a heat exchanger to cool the primary loop.Back in the late 50's, Ford had a concept car called the "Nucleon". I do believe that it never made it past model stage. The idea was based upon someone coming up with a very small reactor. Very good question though...as far as where we're going next?

We could all here on Fordification retire tomorrow if we only knew!
