I have an opportunity to acquire a P/S set-up that includes a bendix box. The tech articles make them sound weak and prone to leaks. I'm getting them for what I feel is a pretty good deal includes the pump, brackets, bendix box, and steering column and various parts to make it work. Ohhh, and I have to pull it. What do you all think?
Personally, I'd recommend just using the Ford/Saginaw box and column. The box is a much better design and parts are much easier to find.

Had a Bendix Steering Gear in my 1965 F250. Did it work? Yup! Did it give me any trouble? Nope! My preference is the Ford Saginaw steering gear as you also made a reference to.
So my advice? If the Bendix Box is what you can get, the price is right, all the parts are there and if it WORKS, then YES get it.
On the other hand, if you're settling for, than don't do it. Wait for a Ford Saginaw gear as you'll be happier.
I know, kind of wishy washy answer...

a power steering cooler can help it from overheating. i have only had experience with two of the bendix boxes. one leaked the other didnt. bendix does give you the chance not to change the column in your truck. usually. the ford saginaw is the better setup though. the benidx is better for the 61-64 guys though.
Never driven a bump with a Saginaw PS box...unless my old 81 F150 4X4 had one, but the best you can hope for out of a Bendix box is power assist steering. As long as you keep the box leak free and a strong pump with fluid, it's okay...but it's not full PS like later models. I'd compare the cost of upgrading to a later Saginaw box system with what you can get now (Bendix) as the Saginaw will last longer.
Put in a Bendix box and I can steer using one finger - real loose now. Only issue is the pump it came with is noisy... So the setup works good and has no leaks but would like the pump to be quieter. Put in Lucas fluid which helped but still noisy. Maybe it will go away with some more use.
