2 x Buckled Front Wheels

Post by robertbruce »

hi all,

ow many times have your wheels buckled??

this is a little off brand but the subject matter is relevant...

My son took his BJ73 to the tyre shop for a front wheel balance...
They told him both front wheels where buckled and his sunrayasias needed replacement...

What is strange is the wheels only shake at 90k's/hr, above and below that it is fine...

i've dealt with cars all my life, have heard of buckled wheels a lot but never had to deal with one, let alone two. im surprised with the punishment ive given to my vehicles that ive never managed to buckle any.....

have any other members had to replace buckled rims??

buckled as in bent? I've seen lots of bent wheels, usually run them on the wheel balancer before putting tires on to be sure they are ok.

sunrayasias??? ive been a mechanic for 20 years, dont think ive ever heard that term used, must be a canadian term,if you suspect the tire shops trying to screw you, take you vehicle to another mechanic for a second opinion, just like a doctor, unfortunately, there are some shady mechanics out there, which makes honest guys like myself look bad.....good luck!

Sunraysia was a manufacturer for white spoke steel wheels. It's become somewhat of a generic term now.

Bobby, ya beat my Google finger to the draw  Haven't heard buckled for a while. Seems like the tire shops around here like, out of round.

I am glad that is solved. I was thinking they were some kind of sun glasses and couldn't figure how that was involved with bent rims. lol

I've been working on cars most of my life, usually under a shade tree, but at times in a professional environment. I worked at a tire store for several years, was even a manager for a while, and I must say it's rare to see a bent wheel. Usually it's so obvious that the driver/owner knows it's bent and knows why.
Customers have said this to me:
"I run up a curb."
"I got my Corvette sideways in a parking lot and hit a *$%#@ thing."

I've seen tire workers mount the wheel incorrectly on the balancer and claim it's a bad wheel. I actually bent a wheel while trying to change the tire. Those tire machines are powerful.

I've done some pretty stupid stuff in my cars that never bent a wheel. My brother ran his 68 GTO up a curb and bent the frame, didn't bend a wheel.

I second the nomination to get a second opinion.

yep yep, downunder on the eastcoast,
not much ftruck here anymore, new CBU imports stopped a few years ago and i think its only private import now, $130K for a 2010 F250 Rancher.. 8?
Jeep is getting big here, they have been flooding advertising for the last few years....
Cruiser lost huge ground since the '99 box downgrade...
Pootrolls very popular for the mods...
and the gov't is trying to limit mods so it really is getting very boring....
