Short story...I have a 71 F100 with a 240 cid engine. I had put a ton into the exhaust, and other various parts hoping to get the rest of the life out of this 74k mile motor.
Long story short, after replacing numerous parts to make it roadworthy, my first test on the interstate proved to be pretty ugly. I lost oil pressure to the point the idiot light came on. Never saw that coming, but I'm a novice and beg for your forgiveness ....anyhow...I purchased a parts truck a 69 F100 with a pretty bad body, but it had a 351w in it that looked promising. I paid 500 bucks for it, and pulled the motor, ran a compression test on it and it failed miserably.
The numbers on the side of the block really baffle me though...there is a info. plate on the side of the block that reads:
Date 7 8 5
D0ZZH
92264
Anyone have any idea what this translates to? I'm having the motor rebuilt professionally, but I have some parts like headers and things that I need to know specifically what this motors application is from. Thanks

Lol. Good luck with that. If you figure it out please let me know how you did it. I got about the same engine out of a '71 donor truck for my build. The PO had swapped engines and I didn't know what it came out of. Same date code, July '85. Everything on the front of the engine was a hodge podge of miscellaneous parts jury rigged to semi-function. After months of research, with zero firm results, I came to the conclusion that I was just going to pick a model and replace everything on the front to match. I'm choosing an '85 F250 as my selection and trying to locate brackets for the application. That way, when I go to the parts store, I just ask for a water pump or p/s pump for an '85 F250, 351w, v-belt, power steering, a/c, etc. I'm picking the F250 because my engine's going to have a few more hp and I want to make sure I get heavy duty applications for everything. F150 stuff would work too so that gives me a pretty decent selection at the parts store or junk yard. I'm going to mod several things anyway so all I'm really concerned about picking at the parts store, or junk yard, are things like water pump, p/s pump, thermostat housing, brackets, etc. If you nail it down I'd be really interested in what you come up with. Good luck and thanks!

LOL, It's comforting to know I'm not the only one scratching my head on this issue. Funny thing is, this isn't a casting number at all...at least not by classic definition. This number is on a metal tag that is attached to the block. BTW, thanks to the poster who posted the casting number i.d. code....that really is cool. I've looked and looked on the web for that thing. So according to the link provided, D0ZZH would stand for 1970 Mustang. But what does the H stand for? Weird. Maybe I scored and it's a high performance motor ...but my luck hasn't been that good lately.
I'll keep looking and let you know what I found out...misery sure loves company.

if it is in fact a '70 block it should (according to everything i've ever read) have a slightly lower deck height than '71 and later blocks which would give you a higher comp. ratio (supposedly they had higher nickel content than later blocks as well)
but other than that there really are no "good" 351w blocks (meaning that they're all pretty much the same)
what heads do you have?
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...
Well, I'm officially a dumb a$$. The engine shop called me and said I don't have a 351, it's a 302. Which I prefer to be honest due to parts being more abundant, but...I feel like an idiot.
oops! that'll make things easier for ya anyways
for future use: an easy and pretty fool proof way to i.d a 351w (other than the width of the intake) - there are 2 fairly hefty reinforcing ribs on either side of the distributor on a 351w block - something i picked up out of a hotrod or carcraft mag way back and have used with repeated success during junkyard hunting trips

Also the water neck sits up above the water pump and you can get socket on lower bolt on 351w as a 302 you have to use wrench because it is below/behind water pump.
