Can not wait until spring! -31F on Wed.

Post by SomersMerc »

For all of you living in a warmer location, I envy you. I want to do some work on the truck before Spring arrives but not being able to fit it in my garage it is just way to cold.
Wed. the temp is going to be -35 C or -31 F. Google the weather network Calgary, Canada.
That does not take into consideration the windchill!!
Thank god we have chinooks so these tempatures don't last to long.

I know what you mean, its a bone chilling 58 degrees here in Arizona today  But seriously, I spent some time in South Dakota, -40 F is the coldest I ever saw, but wow it was unbearable.

SomersMerc,

I have been watching the weather up there as I have to go to Fort McMurray next week for work. It is supposed to warm-up up there to I think 20 something F though so that is about what it was in NM this morning. I can live with that but -15 to -30  That would suck.

Will a truck engine even start up in minus degrees weather? Engine heater required?
Zero experience with anything colder than 20's here in the Puget Sound region.

Shoot it was down in the teens at least a few times since I've been here 72BB... But it is averaging around 30 here in Sumner/Puyallup now... I haven't even found a reason to not wear my shorts year round, other than job interviews. No garage, so I am hoping for cooler temps and snow. Ice is much better, or at least cleaner, to work in than 34 degree mud puddles and soggy soil...

War Horse still starts well, full choke, three pumps and hold at 1/4 peddle, turn the key. If it got cold around here, I'd probably think about 'thinner' oil, a dip stick heater and a rad blanket.

Utah is crazy warn right now. It is raining in the valleys and snowing up high. We are supposed to get 5 ft of snow up at the ski resorts, and 3" to 8" here in the valley's. But I will take the rain over the snow at my house!! :D

To answer the question about vehicles starting:

We plug our vehicles in to a block heater. I used to also have a plug in battery warmer that rapped around the battery as well as the block heater. However, my 2010 Ford Explorer work vehicle has not been plugged in ever and still starts no problem.
I also have command starts on both my F150 and Explorer so I can stand in the front window and push the button to warm them up. I remove the battery out of my 67 Merc and store it inside for the winter.
It will be 5C or 41F by Monday because thankfully Calgary gets chinooks. So that is a 40degree difference in less than 1 week.

Thanks ! I had to Google Chinook...an interesting weather phenomenon. Record temperature change from chinook winds in 1972, Loma Montana...-54F to +48F (-48 to +9 C) in less than 24 hours. Holy cow. Even your 40 degree difference is amazing.

Chinooks are just one of the many "perks" of living on the eastern flanks of the Rocky Mountains! They provide a nice break from the depths of Winter every now and again....even if it does get a bit windy.

But, they do wreak havoc with the trees, who think it is suddenly Spring! And, not so good for those folks who suffer from migraine headaches caused by air pressure changes either.

Like LIFE, you gotta take the bad with the good, I guess. Still beats 4 months of never-ending cold, in my mind! :)

Take heart, SomersMerc, we're half way through Winter now! :D
