Don't see that everyday!

Post by Madman »

Rebuilt many engines in my time, but this has to be a first for me! I pulled the crank out of a 390 that I am looking at using in my 70, and took a good look at the cam bearings. I do not have the foggiest idea how the hell they did it, but whatever they did, the center cam bearing was squished out of BOTH sides of the web. I suppose whoever build ( or attemped to build) this engine never heard of a cam bearing installation tool!

How about a pic of that.

I will get one, because you have to see it to believe it! I have to wait until tomorrow when I have some good light!

Seems like the bearings would have to have been oversized and allowed the cam to slap in the bore to mush it out like that.

The cam pulled easy at first, but had to have a slide hammer to get it out past the last three bearings. The damage was easily visible before the cam was pulled as the bearings looked mushroomed out of their spaces. Looks like another fine application of "beat it with a hammer until it goes in" mechanics, instead of realy knowing what to do.

Every bearing wit the cam is pretty scored or squished, and the more I look over the engine, the more I deduce that the mechanic who built it was a wannabe.

Pictures to follow.

Here are a couple of photos of the bearing. Not the best, I will take better pics in better light tomorrow. I don't know if you can see it, but the shared of the mushroomed out bearing is in pic two.
