Idea for website
Do you guys think it would be beneficial to have a list of members by city and State? The idea would be you could browse the listing and see who is near you, do face to face meetings at times, and maybe even as a resource for potential help? I'm thinking it would be a pian in the butt for the admin to do this, but if they just had a place to list the state, we could self enter the data. What do you think?

That would be kind of cool, I know theres atleast one person in my area, not sure if hes an active member or not but I see his posts on things from time to time. Would be interesting to see who else is near.

Re: Idea for website
There is a mapping program out there that a lot of websites use for this. Actually, it is not a part of the website, an account is just made at the website and then the members can log it with the account name and password and enter their user name and zip code and it maps everyone on the map. I can't remember the link but will see if I can find it. I know a few sites I used to be on used that mapping site for their members. It was pretty cool and used exactly like you suggested.
If I can remember the name and find a link, Ill post it here. It is actually something we as users can do without the mods having to do anything at all. If enough people use it, then a link is all this site would need to find it for new members.

Re: Idea for website
Just my opinion but I feel the location of the member should be left up to the individual. If they want other members to know their town, city ect. they would put it on their profile.
John Tehama County Ca. I'm kinda in the sticks.

Re: Idea for website
The site I mentioned would require the user to actually go in themselves and add themselves to the map. Its not automatic, so only the users that want to be on the map would be mapped.
Still looking for it, but so far, no luck.. I know I was on it a few times with different sites, but for the life of me, i cant remember which sites those were. I will find it.. Im determined!!

Re: Idea for website
I'm with you Mancar, it wouldn't be required, so that was kinda the idea about self entering the info, the state would be on the forum, but it would up to the user to input their data, and therefor, if they didn't want to, it would not be listed.

I think we used to have a "frapper" here, not sure what happened to it (I haven't seen one anywhere for quite some time).

Ah, that sounds familiar!! It was Frappr.. Frappr has closed and no longer works, but people are now using this:
http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap
It would seem that someone could set up an account with a password and then members could go there and pin themselves on the map if they wanted to. Might be easy to set something up like an account called "Fordification". This way, users could go and check out the map and add themselves if they want to. Seems like a great, and completely voluntary idea to me.

Ill play with it and see how it works and if we can set something up.

Re: Idea for website
Either that or have it on the main board index as state with a subsection of your state. You enter your Fordification name, and city, and then everyone can email or PM you with the info you provided. Either way works for me, but it would be nice to know if there is another truck nut in my neighborhood!

Re: Idea for website
I went ahead and set up a map for now people can put markers on. Maybe it gets kept, maybe not.. but we can try it out and see how much participation there is. Right now, the map is not password protected so anyone can access it and add to it or change it. I donated to, and have emailed the site to see if we can limit access to it.
In the meantime, feel free to go to the map and place a pin. You can zoom in and place your marker wherever you want, so you dont have to be exact if you dont want to and can place a marker at the next closest town if you dont want anyone finding you. Or just put it in the middle of your state... Completely voluntary and up to you.
The way I set my marker, and what I would recommend, is to put your Fordification user name as your name, and the under comment, put the year and style of your bump (or one of your bumps for those of you lucky enough to have multiples).
Once people participate put markers up, I think the map might be a helpful tool to see who is where, and it will also look pretty cool to see at a glance where members are.
Here is the link: http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap/map/Fordification
Since it is not "secure" right now, please do not edit a tag that does not belong to you. Just set up your own tag if you want or browse the map. If the map works out and I can get it secure so people cannot edit others, then I will be more than happy to turn over the page to Keith or the mods so they can manage it if they want. There is script included on the admin page to put the map directly on this website if they want so it can display right here on Fordification.
Post here once you have put a tag up on the map to keep this thread alive and see how much participation we can get, and how useful a tool this can be. Only way this will be useful is with people participating.

Re: Idea for website
I threw my quick location up. I think the only thing I see that may be an issue is how do you cross reference someone names on the map versus the website if they enter something different, which come to think of it, I myself did?!!!!!!!!!!!!
Other than that, pretty cool!

Re: Idea for website
As for names, I would hope that people would put their Fordification name on there since this map is for Fordification.
Found something cool... Other people cannot edit your tag. You can only edit your own tag for up to an hour after placing it. Otherwise, it can only be edited by the admin (currently me). I logged out of Admin mode, and cannot edit the Madman tag, so that is good to see.
Anyway, I think this might be a pretty cool addition to the site for those that want to participate. And if any of the mods are interested in seeing the script they supply, it can be added to show on the site, or do a pop up window from the site, or a few other options.

I agree with you on entering the Fordification names, but look at me, I came up with the idea of the list, and the first thing I do is enter something else as my name.....Making me a self proclaimed "Dumb Arse"!Calfdemon wrote:As for names, I would hope that people would put their Fordification name on there since this map is for Fordification.
