1971 F250 "Explorer Special" production numbers?

Post by youngbodean70F250 »

Does anyone know how many "Explorer Specials" were produced in 1971? I found numbers for the stylesides, but no individual numbers for special packages. I just found (and bought) a 1971 F250 Camper Special, Explorer Special (package "C"), medium blue metallic, with 13195 original miles. Yes, the mileage is correct. I called the original 86 yr old salesman who is still working at the same dealership in Bellefountaine, OHIO. He told me he and the original owner were good friends, and that Mr. Lowell Miller rarely drove the truck from 1971 until 2005, when his family sold the truck in an estate sale. At that point it had 9750 miles on it. The truck is like a time capsule, 100% original and in excellent condition. The guy I bought it from not only didn't know it was an Explorer, but for some reason he thought it had 113,000 miles because it's age. He had all of the original paperwork, manuals, plates, appraisal, salesaman's picture, etc, but never investigated it during the short time he had it. Lucky for me....

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet, and when I do I'll have to figure out how to do it (I'm on dial-up and not exactly hi-tech computer saavy). Other than that, I didn't think it was useless to ask for information on Explorer Special production numbers.

During the time period for our bump trucks... (minus the first year 67) the Explorer Special was a "mid -year special" group of options packages starting in 68, similar to the Ranger Packages for a little less money... there is some info here on FORDification.com in the tech section, no production numbers through... The Explorer Special package seems to be more commonly found with other normal "Special" packages like the Camper Special... I guess it was an easy mid year upgrade if someone was going to spend the extra money anyway on spiffing up their new toy IE: Get all the Ranger Stuff for your Camper Special without paying as much as you normally would...

for the dents the Explorer thing was a little different and I have even seen Explorer Ranger XLT dents...

Good looking pics. It's funny to think that the countries 'style' went from the conservative colors of the '60's to the oddball color combos like the Explorer's seat.

The seat is out of style for todays trucks. I like it. It is something that probably couldnt be reproduced today. I like it in the fact that its original and preserves the style of these trucks. Put a protective cover on it now. Before its too late.
