I was a bad boy today.

Post by Kurt Combs »

First we skipped church to go to breakfast. After breakfast went for a slow drive through town to see if a cell phone store was open. This doesn't take long in a town the size of Lakeport. Then we head back to the freeway to go home. I decided to show my bride how my new 460 w/C-6 performs, even though it is in a heavy F-250. So at about fifteen miles an hour at the beginning of the freeway on ramp I put the pedal all the way down and held it there. Well the back tire lost traction for a pretty good spell. Not sure how far but probably through one gear. Before I reached the slow lane I was doing 65 mph and my wife was quite startled. After she regained her composure she started laughing and accusing me of enjoying my latest actions. In the mean time I was looking in the rear view mirror to see if a CHP had observed my behavior. Of course I had no idea that old 460 would do that and a soon to be 64 year old couldn't have done it on purpose, that would hardly be acting my age....... :D

The other day, my stepson and I were cruising in his '89 5.0 Mustang. That car can run! Anyway, we were behind a man of mature years (like us) in a new model Porsche Carrera Turbo S coupe. We followed him for about 3 miles and then we both turned on the freeway with a clear 1/4 mile of pavement. When we pulled up alongside him I told my stepson, "Let's see if he'll play" and he dropped it a gear, popped the clutch and punched it. The guy didn't even smile. I told my stepson, "That man has lost all the joy in life". How can a man our age have a bad car like that, have a punk in a 5.0 Mustang pull up alongside and punch it, and not wax his a$$? That Porsche could have dusted us bad in a hundred yards. Glad to see you still have the joy in your life, Kurt!

One of my favorite games when we are bored is: how long of a skid mark can we make tonight?
Went back behind home depot and lit her up. U can really get alot of power out of those little 5.0s.
Another game I like to play is either roaring pas some girls, or racing my buddies in their big jacked up mud trucks.
I usually win, but I hope to be able to have this much fun later in life.

About a month ago I went racing. After a weekend of being on the track (a 3.5 mile road course) I hitched the Datsun to the back of the Bump and got ready to make the drive home. My Dad had wrecked his racer several month prior and was my shotgun and pit crew for this event.

So we go through the sweeper of an on-ramp to the Interstate and I floored it. I have to practically floor the old 390 just to get up to speed cause I got a trailer and a lot of weight. Next thing I know, I'm doing 80 in my old Bump towing the racer. I didn't feel like I was going fast and the truck sure felt good, nice and smooth. I backed off the gas and looked at Dad who looked calm and relaxed and then he leaned over to adjust the radio. Took me about twenty minutes to settle into 60 MPH.

Good day Racer Z,

May I know what rear-end ratio and tire size you're using? Smooth and comfortable at 80 MPH seems like quite a thing for a Bumpside, though perhaps the tremendous inertia of the load you were pulling had something to do with it.

By the way, I adore 240z's and have a 1972 myself, which is rust-free and all stock other than a fresh L28 engine. :)

Thank you very much,
Robroy

I've never calculated the read-end ratio. It's a Dana 60, probably 3.7:1 / whatever the tallest set was in 69.
Tire size is 9.5 x 16.5 on Camper Special rims.

The motor is a fresh 390 with a Carter 625 CFM and an Edlebrock Performer 390 intake manifold. Other than that it's stock. C6 tranny. The motor was done making power, but it has enough displacement that it was still pulling. I seldom go over 70 cause my FE block is out of it's power band and all I'm going to do is burn it up.

I've recently rebuilt the rear suspension and installed new shocks. The weight in the bed sure helps it ride smooth. Oh, and I have storage for 53 gallons of gas which was nearly full. That's 350 pounds of fuel. I also installed the Camper Special springs which might effect how it rides.

You have a rust free Datsun? Sweet. That's one of the few rust free Datsun's left.

Thanks for the info Racer Z!

Yes my 1972's basically rust-free, and very straight. It has been sleeping in a garage for the last thirteen years. I dismantled most of it as a teenager before I understood how much time and money it really took to restore a car. :) But it's a "keeper" for sure. In my opinion the 240z's one of the most beautiful and fun-to-drive cars ever made. The photos I've seen of yours make me think, "How could I have let mine sit in a garage in pieces all these years!?"
