68 F100 4x4 for $300

Post by WoodhouseTruckShop »

Well this is more of a tech article on what I am doing/planning to do to the truck but this is how it goes. I was looking on Craigslist one day and I saw this beauty for only $300 bucks. I figured that might be a bit of a project but I will look into it anyway. So I called the guy (young punk kid) and he said the clutch went out in it. I adjusted the clutch and drove the truck 3 miles and then it quit again so this was true. He also said that it needed rear brakes. I had a look underneath and he said dont bother they are in a box in the back of the truck. He completely took them off the truck, pads, drums, everything and then he disconnected the rear from the master cylinder. So I bought it. So here we have a $300 truck, a $150 clutch, and $100 worth of rear brakes give or take, and I had Judges Custom Upholstery reupholster and fix the seat for $500 so throw that in there as well. So that brings us to $1,050. I then added power steering. I took the pump, box, brackets and lines off of a 77Ford F150 4x4. The truck had a strait 6 in it so a little bit of fabbing was required. Set up cost me $200 I took the draglink and steering linkage as well. I did NOT take the column.

Now here is the power steering conversion.

Since the frame was boxed in the front I cut a 7x8 inch plate from half inch steel and drilled holes to the pattern of the steering box and then I tapped those holes for threads. The next step was to position the box where it would clear the radiator the oil filter and the power steering pump. After I found this location I drilled holes in the frame and the Welded the bracket to the frame. I did not tap the frame because if there is a small gap between the frame and your plate the bolts would never fully tighten.

Now for the power steering pump. the strait 6 bracket had all kinds of legs and supports coming off of it so I cut all of those off and then had to cut off one of the holes that mounted it to the water pump. The reason being Ford made the bigblock waterpump holes slightly closer that the 77 300CI strait 6 ones are.

The L part that comes off the back of the bracket was installed by me to ad stability to the bracket.

This shows how closely my setup fits in there. Alot of people think you have to get a different steering column. This is not true. If you own a grinder and a welder this is no problem. I had to shorten the steering shaft NOT the steering column by about 4 inches. I then took a piece of flat stock 1x3" and drilled 2 holes consistent with those on the rag joint so I left the end on the steering box and bolted my plate to the rag joint. Then I welded the Steering shaft to the piece on the rag joint. I forgot to mention In order to use the 77 tie rod ends I had to buy a tapered hole reamer and ream the holes out a little bit because the 68 ball joints are slightly smaller. That was the only tool that was needed to make the power steering stuff fit on the truck that I didnt have.
