Rolling Restoration

Post by Oregon_Redneck »

Did anyone actually drive their truck during the restoration process? I want to do a "rolling" restoration. I mean I know there are times when I won't be able to drive it but for the most part, I'd still like to. Anyone have any experience with this?

Man, I'm glad to have found this site by the way. A lot of great info and good reads.

Any daily driver is a rolling resto. Heck, my '05 Lincoln is getting restored as I drive it. Seems like I'm always fixing something... :)

Actually I think as long as you are trying to improve things vs. just let it deteriorate you are restoring it. If you are just driving it and doing the absolute minimum to keep it safe then you are not restoring it.

Valid points Ranchero. I've always had it in my head that it needed to be completely apart for restoration. I'm learning that's not always the case.

Thanks!

I've been doing one since 2006. It goes slowly though.

I wouldn't consider mine a restoration but it is being built with the intention of keeping it drivable as much as possible throughout the process. I chose this route to show younger folks they do not need to totally disassemble a vehicle to achieve their goal. When young most have very limited funds which tends to lead to projects started & never finished. By doing it in stages all the time driving it the probability of losing interest is minimal. The day will come when it is a frame off but I am getting all major mods done while still driving it during the summer. Mine is actually on track for the 5 yr timeline I originally planned. If anything I think it goes faster this way.

Once something is accomplished you are off to the next task. If tore all the way down it becomes very easy to put it off making it take longer which in turn leads to a higher probability of losing interest.

Restoring a truck? Try to keep it running and on the road.

I figured out a long time ago one of the best favors you can do for yourself is to keep 2 vehicles on the road at the same time.
