How do i find a GOOD lawer

Post by hazelnut »

Im in a estate settlement and ive had 2 lawers and both of them were a waste of my hard earned money. Fired one and the one i have now seems all im doing is paying for his vacation that he goes on every 2 weeks. Yes 2 weeks of showing up to the office and 2 weeks vacation. Been asking him to get paperwork from a relative's lawer and he can't even do that. First tells me i can go pick it up and by law they have to give it to me. Ive made 3 trips and thier lawer will not give it to me, I ask my lawer to get it 2 months ago, He's not making any effort to get it. I sent him a email last night to ask what papers i need to file at the courthouse to get the papers myself. He sends back a crappy responce that he'll be back on the 10th and don't answer my question. Im going broke by the day and tired of this slacker bleading my pocket without doing anything for me.

How do you find a good lawer ? Ive asked people around me but thier like me really havent ever needed one so they no clue how to find one worth a crap. I need help from anywhere i can get it. Ive looked at lawer ratings online and thats where i got the first one.. Both told me how good they were, Both havent showed me much. So far all ive done is spend money for no action. Its like the buddy system to bleed clients dry. Im in a tight spot and its getting smaller everyday. I need help. Thank you for any help anyone can give.

Sorry if this is way off topic but im running out of places to turn.

File a complaint with the BAR association, too.

I forgot to post my location, Im In Willaimsburg, VA area. But im open to emails with a good lawer for solid advice. I can't get a answer from mine on what papers to file at the courthouse.

flyboy2610, Ive got a loaded wagon that feels like its already overloaded, Me reporting him to the BAR is going to destroy the wagon. He might not be doing much to help me but im sure if i report him to the BAR i will get to see how good he is when he sets his sights on destroying me. Im not trying to be rude but i don't think that a very smart thing to do.

But i think if i went to the BAR and asked how to find a good lawer that would be a big help maybe.

I did ask the president of a bank when this all started, The refered lawer said he couldn't take the case because of a conflict of interist. Those are very good ideas and i will be checking those options. Thank you for the help.

I think i should ask and look out of town though, Seems the intown lawers don't want to have a conflict with thier golf buddy. Whats your thoughts on dealing with a out of town lawer ? Do you think its a better chance of getting one to do thier job if thier outside the circle of the local lawers. A friend said he thought i would be better off if the lawer is from out of town, No local hangups and friendships.

Im just looking for anyones ideas on whats the best course of action to find one thats working for me, to help me. Whats everyones thoughts about hireing someone from the outside ?

A good friend told me that a month ago and i just kept hoping for the best. I agree with you and think my chances are better with a lawer thats a outsider from the locals. I talked with my accountant this morning and going to see her sunday at her house and see what her thoughts are to. Shes very good with money and has a good head on her sholders. She will probaly do more for me in a afternoon than the lawer has done in 4 months. And for a lot less money

Thanks for the advice Michael

Mr Nut , I agree with your thoughts on this and what Mr Michael said too.
Can you contact your local Better Bussiness Bureu?

They might help you, also the accountant can be VERY helpful and have some good advice too.

If you know some one that works at the court house/ sheriffs office might recommend some one.

What ever you do , try to remain calm and think things through with good old common sense.

Good luck.

I went to the courthouse in the next county today to see who was on thier list of civil lawers, They had 5 lawers. 4 of them have the same Post Office box. Talk about lets make a deal, I know to never hire one from there  The woman at the desk said she had never noticed :hmm:

Do they work out of same office, lets hope!! If they do then you would be alright because they can't work cases against each other(conflict of interest). If they all are separate firms or offices RUN LIKE HELL AND NEVER LOOK BACK!!! Also warn everyone you know that needs a lawyer.

Thier all different firms, I drove away from there as fast as i could. I told a friend about it tonight and he said that "Its the last county i should look for a lawer." Always heard it was a corrupt county, I guess that proved it.

I would say your friend heard right. Yeah I think I would drive a hundred miles to find someone away from there. Looks like they would atleast try and hide their buddy system alittle better than they do.
