Top Gear, '69 Bumpside owner vs. Prius

Post by ultraranger »

Entertaining Top Gear (UK) video shows what happens when you park a Toyota Prius in a Bump owner's parking spot. LOL

Hahhaha! Olympia is full of Prius owners, hell the city and state government buys the things. And I swear, half the people who drive them are smug fart sniffers who behave like they just stepped out of a South Park episode about hybrids.

You know that all us Bump owners are killing the planet. (riiiight)

...let's see...the earth has been here for about 4.5 billion years. Modern man has been around for about 200,000 years. Industrilized man has been here for roughly 200 years. I'm supposed to believe evil humans have destroyed in 200 years time what has been in process for 4.5 billion years?

Makes me think of this George Carlin video (language warning. Funny, but at the same time a lot of truth in it).

Great video! I LOVE the UK Top Gear! And I HATE the Prius!
Here is another Top Gear clip that tells you everything you ever needed to know about the Prius!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=badoMjA_rW0

It's interesting how the Prius is supposed to be helping the planet, but the amount of fuel and energy spent to build ONE Prius could have probably built ten regular small cars. What about the damage to the earth down the road when those batteries are to be disposed of? What happens then?

I personally don't find the Prius' mileage to be impressive. Here's a tidbit to think about; my parents had a '93 Ford Festiva (manufactured by KIA for Ford Motor Company) that my dad bought new for a work car. It used a 1.3 liter four cylinder with multi-point injection and a 5-speed manual. They decided to get out of town for a couple weeks and hit the road on a good old road trip from south Texas to Niagra Falls and back. During that trip, there were tanks of fuel that they achieved 55 MPG on! To me, that is amazing, considering that it WAS 1993 TECHNOLOGY and was an $8,000 MSRP car! :?

The Chevy Volt is a turd too. However, unlike the Prius, Toyota didn't receive any government handout money (at tax payer expense) to build the Prius. Chevrolet took $3 billion tax dollars from the working citizens (without our consent) to get into the car-making business. (the government is currently 26% owner of General Motors --guess they should change the name to 'Government Motors' instead). Each Chevy Volt costs Chevrolet over $81,000.00 dollars each to produce. They can't hardly sell it for $40,000.00 dollars (basically a 50% loss on each unit made), and to top it off they have to offer a $7,500.00 dollar rebate (another subsidy provided at the tax payer's expense) to bribe people into buying them. I've read recently that that $7,500.00 subsidy will be going up to $10,000.00 dollars.

It is estimated that each Volt cost the taxpayers $250,000 dollars each to produce. How many fossil fuel vehicles could be produced for that cost?

I'm amused by someone that will get rid of a vehicle that gets roughly 20 MPG to buy a $30,000 to $40,000 dollar hybrid that (supposedly) gets 40+ MPG. Especialy if your vehicle is paid for. Do you know how much fuel 40,000.00 dollars could buy for a vehicle that gets 20 MPG? It would take about 13 years just for you to break even on the cost of a Volt, and I doubt the Volt would even be in running condition by that time --and it would very likely have to have its $10,000.00 battery pack changed out before then, if it was still running.

Maybe instead of calling it the Chevy 'Volt,' they should have called it the Chevy 'Short.' --you know, an electrical term describing the non-continuity of an electrical circuit --also describes what the car does --falls miserably short in all aspects, considering the vast amounts of money that have been pumped into its development.

Best mileage car I ever owned was a two door 1979 VW Rabbit diesel. It had a 1.5l four banger, no AC or power steering, 4 speed manual trans, frisbees for tires, and the optional extra range fuel tank that held 18 gallons. Around town it was easy peasey to get 45mpg without even trying. On the freeway, long trips, I could hit 57-58mpg. Given the size of the fuel tank I once drove it from Bakersfield, California to Temple, Texas and refilled once, in New Mexico.

Had a bit less than a quarter tank when I got to Temple, Texas.

It was almost like driving for free. Still one of the most amazing car experiences I've ever had, it seemed like you never had to buy fuel.

Of course it was 70's diesel technology, so it was smoky and noisy. On a cold start day, temps below freezing, it sounded like those ice grinder machines in Starbucks. Decently quick though, not a barn burner but it was fun to drive. I've not tried any of the new VW diesels of today that are supposed to be cleaner and quiet. But I have often thought about how they were able to get Prius beating fuel economy out of a cheap little econobox diesel in the late 1970s. The thing didn't even have a computer, it was all manually timed and controlled fuel injection, so no electronics past the basics.

:yt: Gotta love those old-school baby diesels! One of my dad's former coworkers had an early '80's Ford Escort Diesel. If I remember right, I believe it got around 45 mpg. I'm not sure how long Ford made those diesel Escorts or if they were even Ford diesel engines. :?
