This is stupid

Post by jzjames »

Id like to know if you are supposed to lubricate lug nuts/bolts. Ive hurt myself a few times loosening rusted lugnuts, and Im getting too old for that. I dont want to hear "absolutely not" and "yes, absolutely". C'mon.
Can I figure this out before I die?

I use anti seize every time. Had a bad time with not doing it to my Dart after i installed my willwoods an new weld drag light wheels, ended up costing me almost $800 later to fix the damage. Now i use it on every vehicle, i also check once a month for tourqe on all my lugs its a habbit now

I've always put just a few drops of motor oil onto the lug nut's first two or three threads. And clean up the threads first with a brass wire wheel prior to that if need be. :2cents:

I've used Anti-seize on mine for a long time, sure does help. Even if I end up being silver up to my elbows every time I use it. What is it with that stuff anyway? Seems the harder I try to keep it off of myself, the more of it I get on me.

I agree with those above, clean up the threads on the studs and use anti seize. Torque to the proper specifications, not too tight. Should not be a problem in the future.

whoa! ok you can use wd-40 or a light oil but anti-seize in every old shop ive worked at has made sure to explicity explain that this was a no-no. It makes it easier to overtorque and damage the threads. Not to mention reduce friction so those nuts can back off easier.....no one else had heard that? maybe its a cali thing.....

JzJames, thanks for asking this. I actually didn't know this mattered; I've always used regular black grease on those threads.

Thanks for your opinions, I actually googled this before I posted here to ask you guys. I got "a dab of grease just on the first 3 threads", anti-seize, oil, WD40, and none of it would cause the lug bolts to back out as a rule.
Like I said, Ive strained some tendons and things when I was young. Makes me cringe. The last time I tried some of my motorcyle chain lube in the spraycan, but sometimes the stuff just seems to dry out by the next time I have to take a wheel off.

I thought there might be one correct way to do it.

Having recently twisted off 3 water pump bolts and had to bust a timing chain cover due to one of them being fused to it, I will ALWAYS use anti-seize now and in the future.

In the shops I worked at that did repair for the oil patch and heavy industry anti-seize was the norm on damn near everything
threads, registers, metal to metal surfaces and in many cases gaskets. Aluminum based in most applications copper based for

Used anti seize in the engineering spaces during my 24 years in the Navy and use it to this day. It works and the nuts will not back off due to its use. Of course this is just my :2cents:

I put nothing on, and torque to the proper spec. Not using a torque wrench ruined a pair of rotors once. Never a problem with the proper torque.
