2001 honda civic surprise

Post by hedz »

well i worked on a honda for the first time in my life today. now i did not do anything extensive, just changed the manual transmission lube, the engine oil, the spark plugs, and the air filter. i'm going to tackle the ball joints tomorrow, they are all shot. i just want to say that the work i performed was surprisingly easy. 1 hour and 30 mins total with beer. these vehicles seem to be very simple to work on. i also drove it around abit. it has a 1.7 liter and a 5 speed manual. it got great gas mileage while i was driving it. i'm fairly certain it was just over 30mpg, probably between 35 and 30 mpg and that was before the work i performed. i didn't do a calibration but am guestimating based on the amount of fuel i put in and the miles i drove on the gas. overall i was impressed. i always shunned these vehicles because growing up there were lots of what my friends and i would call yo boys, guys with sideways hats blaring gangster rap in little hondas with nitrous and fart tips and it was always fun to beat them in a race. this put the cars in a bad light for me. but i clearly recognize now the appeal to these vehicles and have more respect for them as a result. i could teach the little ones how to do what i did today easily which is a good thing! so if you own a honda, kudos to you. they are pretty awesome from a reliable and efficient standpoint in my opinion and i want one now as a cross country daily driver

still not as good as a ford truck though... :fr:

There's a reason Honda's are some of the most popular cars built today,

That must have been an easy Honda... lol.
I had an 89 Accord that was a real pain to work on. Really tight, and it
had the feedback carb with about half a zillion vacuum lines. :|
But it was a good car. Even had hidaway headlights.. When they
were popped up at night, it gave it kind of a different feel from
the inside.

But I've been running a 05 Yota Corolla for the last few years as
my car.. I consider them as reliable as the Hondas, but not as sporty I guess..
And mine stays bone stock.. None of that goofy ricer mess on mine.
Some of the stuff those buoys do is pretty danged silly.

Just passed 70k miles, and haven't had a single problem with the
car so far. Bang on wood.. It's mainly the gas sipping that I like..
You get spoiled getting 40+ mpg.. I get 43 at 65 mph. Probably about
40-41 at 70.. About 38-39 doing 75 I think, but I need to test more at
that speed.. I can do 75 on I-45 now.. :) Used to be 70 day/65 night..
Now it's 75 day or night. Probably knocks 30-40 min off my usual trip
to OK I bet, being I usually go up there at night.
It's a 900 mile round trip, and the truck would cost me a mint to go back
and forth, doing it's 15-16 mpg..
BTW, the newer Corolla is much less cluttered under the hood vs the
old Honda. Doesn't even have plug wires.. So it's easier to get to stuff
in general.

We have a 95' Civic EX two door 5 speed that now has 180k on it. Wife's car, all stock, extremely clean, and a rock solid little car. I would not hesitate to get in it and drive to anywhere. Some things have gone bad over the years and needed to be replaced, as usual, but not much really. The biggest failure was the computer, which died about 5 years ago. The mechanics were amazed that it went bad, but there it is. Get's 38mpg or so on the freeway, about 30 in town. Plenty of boy racers scope it over, but my wife says if she ever sells it, she won't let one of them have it for no amount of money.
