Bump Respect

Post by rltvader »

Well, I was jsut observing a few things and I felt like I would ask a few questions.
I seems since I have arrived at college, for some reason, everytime I come out to my truck, I find one or two new pieces of garbage in my truck. Has anybody had this problem before? I don't know if it is a complete lack of respect towards me and the truck, or just some smarta$$ kids being, well, stupid. Also, since the aquirment of my new 72 F250 for 700 dollars, I told a few people and all I ever got out of them was that it was a POS. I'm not trying to rant, but it feels like it.
Also, when I first got my bump in highschool, I'll admit, it wasn't the prettiest thing in the world. People would spit on it at school, kick the tires, and once again, call it a POS. I have heard this ALOT, and have considered selling it just so I couldn't hear it anymore. I have even had a large wood nail PLACED in between my tall tread, and this nail was about 3-4 inches long, not real easy to gey lodged ito your tire. But once I got it painted it all stopped. Interesting how a fresh coat of paint can change so many people's opinions huh?
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone here has had the same problem.

Good afternoon Rltvader,

The short answer to your question's "yes." To my surprise, almost everybody that's seen #50 (other than real gear-heads, of course) has requested an explanation for its existence. "So, what is this--really," and "what's going on here," and "why'd you do this," and "this would be cool if it were a Mustang," are things I've often heard.

And now that you mention it, I do have some vague memories of discovering random trash in the bed that folks tossed in there. I'd forgotten about that completely! It only happened when it was parked in the college parking lot though; never happens anymore.

This lack of respect's not all bad though--it enhances whatever natural anti-theft qualities these trucks have, especially when the paint's old.

I've had the same issue even with a brand new Ranger. Some people are just inconsiderate jerks. Just keep your chin up and keep driving that unique rolling piece of history, while all the rest of the college kids drive mass produced plastic covered conformist-mobiles.

Funny story that might cheer you up... I was in a McDonalds eating lunch one day. I was facing a window that looked out to the parking lot. I watched with great anger as a BMW with a sunroof (remember this, sunroof) pulled up next to my truck, door dinged the heck out of me, and then proceeded to toss a large shopping bag FULL of trash into the bed of my truck. :x He casually strolled in, totally oblivious to the fact that I had watched what he had done. So I waited for him to sit, and luckily he sat facing the same window. I made my way outside, walked up to the bed of my truck, made it really obvious that I was looking at the new door ding on my truck. I then noticed that the sunroof on his car was open. I then reached into the bed, found his bag of trash, opened it, and dumped it into the open sunroof of his car. Tis better to give than to receive!

I just the other day witnessed a "couple" of fellows at the parking lot of the grocery store, after putting their purchase into their crossover/hybrid SUV, then emptying their garbage into the empty shopping cart. I said to them as I was going by with my cart of groceries, "nice of you to leave your trash for others to pick up after you", they must have agreed as they kept throwing more trash into the cart, all I could do was shake my head in disbelief. So maybe it's just a lack of respect for any thing some people have these days. Glad I was taught better. Not sure if I could keep my cool though if someone disrespected my truck, that's when attitudes need adjusting. Only problem I have, is keeping a can of gas in the back of the truck, without it being appropriated by someone. Only way I can keep 'em, is with a locked chain.

Good for you!

Interesting thing I noticed driving my '70 F-250 4x4. When I first bought it I painted it nice, 4" lift 35's, 1 ton axles, giant 3/8" thick winch bumper and 20K PTO winch and I got thumbs up everywhere, compliments abound. Years later I took the lift out, put the truck back to stock height and ran 33's. The paint was a little worn and I replaced the nicely finished, but heavily repaired bed with a perfect original bed of a different color. I got the same kind of "Why are you driving that?" "You paid money for this?" reactions from people.

Didn't bother me, but I did like the truck better with the lift and a truck with nice paint is a lot easier to be proud of.

Sadly to many times, when you drive a pickup expect at some time or another to find trash.

Watch and see who likes what maybe you'll feel better about driving your pickup?

I wouldn't let other (stupid) people's opinion of your property change your own opinion of your truck. I bought my bump while in college(3 yrs ago) and still live in a college town. I've gotten my fair share of ugly remarks by automotive-ignorant people and green freaks(especially when I start it up and blow a cloud of smoke out the tailpipe). But they just have to deal with it. It's my truck and it's perfectly legal to drive anywhere. Tough luck truck-haters!

Lately, I've gotten a lot more thumbs up and compliments that ugly remarks, which is good  . I also think most people are scared to park next to me because my bump looks like it will destroy their car(in any type of challenge or just because it's doors could dent the heck out of most modern crap). But I will say, I haven't found trash in the bed of my truck yet. Respect for your bump will come from the people you want to hear it from and that means the most. Not what some college student living in lala land would say.
